I think it was for respect for the dead. ie: if he wasn't executed, it's completely disrespectful to say some of the things that were said in the thread.

My guess: Someone said either something the mods didn't agree with (they are heavily left-leaning), or they were scared it was going to get out of hand with hardcore feelings on both sides of the issue.

The thread with the crudeness about a mother's anatomy in the "17 kids" thread was far worse imho.
