McFarland hints at the starting O line

Going with the younger guys confirms what we expected; Fine had no idea how to recruit. Cotton may have found a couple diamonds in the rough, it seems, in Lamaak and Hulbert.

Re: McFarland hints at the starting O line

If McFarland is that optimistic about our O-line, does that mean we may actually have an offensive line that by the end of the season is worth writing home about?

Yea it sounds like we know who they are leaning to for 4 out of 5 positions at least, Lamaak, Tibbs, ?, Schmeling, Dedrick, I'm interested to see Lamaak he has gained 80 pounds since at ISU, hopefully he can still move, the kid played QB at Kennedy and led them to state, was a mobile post player, I think if he retained his quick feet than it will be a treat, but if he is just some fat lazy kid now, who knows, I'm interested to find out.

Has Schmelling worked some at center?

I dont think Lamaak has gained 80 lbs in the last year. Rivals had him listed at 265 his senior year ans hes at about 305 now. Itll be nice to see how he does since he was a good athlete in HS, so he should have good hands and footwork.

It would be huge if McFarland ends up with tackles with sufficient footwork to stay with rush ends. You have to go back to Stubbe & Shelton to find T's who had at least decent footwork and to the Insight.com bowl team to find ones who could really play.

I'm going by what the roster had him at last year, I doubt he was quite 265 and trusting rivals or any recruiting database on weight and height is pretty bogus, he might have played at that weight for football as a senior at Kennedy but lost weight for basketball, I would bet he was prolly more than 225 when he came in, but prolly not 265, especially since he came in as a tight end.

I thought the Johnson kid from NE was a serious option at center. Yet he's not mentioned at all here. Also, any truth to the rumor that Frere is moving to O-line?

I think Johnson and Dedrick are the only two set OL positions right now, although Lamaak is taking charge at RT based on that article.

Pretty sure Frere is staying at DT. It was the old staff that was considering moving him.

Man, did they know absolutely nothing about coaching an offensive line, or what? I wish we could see what the new staff could do with the guys we had the last 2 seasons.

The new staff has yet to coach a game. How do we know they aren't worse? I think they'll do great but it's funny to see so many blindly optpmisic posts.

I hope Stephens makes a push and starts at LG. I thought he did pretty good in the games he started...the Kock games. That would leave us with a frosh, 2 sophs, and 2 juniors on the line. I also hope they at least try Blaes and Schmeling at center to give Johnson some competition, but hopefully BJ is as good as our last d-lineman turned center, Scott Stephenson.

I agree that the optimism is a little high, but after two guy from last years team bounced around NFL rosters for a while last year, ya kinda got to go with bad coaching. What I saw from the OL last year was painfully bad play. Also, Stephenson came out and said he learned more from McFarland in four week than he had for 3 years under Mac's guys.

Maybe there is something to this coaching thing...........

Did I say anything about being optimistic about this year's OL? Nope, I didn't. I just criticized the old coaching staff...the coaches who were basically fired with, what, 4 games left in the season? The ones who had 4 returning starters on the OL last year, 2 of which were future NFL talents. The same coaches who had one 1000 yard rusher in the last 5 years. The same coaches who had an OL that gave up 39 sacks last year. Yeah, I'm really going out on a limb there, thinking things are going to be better.
