Headed to SF! What to do?

So I am taking a business trip to San Fran this week and was wondering if anyone had any "musts" while there.

We got tickets to an afternoon Giants game late in the week, that should be fun, especially if Bonds can hit one that day. Other than that, I am totally free. I am staying downtown right by Moscone.

When I went there, we went to Alcatraz; it was really cool. Other than that, we just drove around the rest of the day seeing various things.

Make sure you tell everyone that mrsbrianhos exists. Don't take any chances.

Hah, we are going to have to have a CF get together at one of the games this fall so I can actually prove her existance. And it really is her that posts here and that really is her on her avatar pic.

I think Chad's point is that a good number of guys in San Fran swing from the other side of the plate

Mind the gap!

Re: Headed to SF! What to do?

I lived in the Bay Area for 3.5 years, and it is a great place. The list is endless depending on how long you are going to be there and how much you want to travel, but here's a short list:

In San Fran:
Golden Gate Bridge
(Great view from above on the North side of the bridge)
Lombard Street
Fisherman's Wharf / Pier 39
Trolley Car from the Wharf
View from Coit Tower
Alcatraz (somewhat overrated, but ...)

Surrounding Areas:
Highway 1 / Pacific Coast Highway
(From SF to Santa Cruz; stop at Half Moon Bay for lunch)
Monterrey (Cool Acquarium) / Carmel (1 hour south)
Marin County / Sausalito (just north of GG Bridge)
Wine Country (2 hours north)
Tech Museum (downtown San Jose) / Apple's Headquarters (Cupertino) / Cisco System's Headquarters (San Jose)
Winchester Mystery House (San Jose just off of I-280)

Check out Lefty O'Doul's. We also went to a place called Liverpool Lil's for lunch one day. We really enjoyed that.
Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz are good spots to see.

Re: Headed to SF! What to do?

I live in the city, the area you're staying in is pretty nice. Word of advice, stay north of 4th st & market when you're downtown. A lot of market street is pretty sketchy.

But the embarcadero's nice, with the piers and good views of the bay. Before the Giant's game, check out the 21st Amendment Brewery on 2nd and Bryant. Prohibition Ale? Amazing.

Also, head over to Dolores Park in the Mission. Probably the sunniest part of the city (side note, dress warmly. The high was 65 today). Check out the North Beach neighborhood, where the beats like Ginsburg and Ferlinghetti started out. It's kinda gentrified, but has a lot of cool areas+city lights bookstore. And check out Amoeba music at Haight and Stanyan. Hands down the greatest music store in the United States.

There's a lot more to see. Hit me up if you need any advice/directions.

Re: Headed to SF! What to do?

I lived out north of SF for alittle while. SF is easily one of the best big cities in the world!!!

A few recommendations I don't think anyone has said:
take a wine country tour - will set you back some time and $$$
Haight-Ashbury - people are .... different
Cuban district - you'll see some things you'll NEVER see in Iowa
Chinatown
Golden Gate overlook - north of bridge is an amazing observation point
wish I could remember the name of the place near the wharf that serves Irish coffee.... yum!
