Fred Thompson
I posted this in another thread but since its more about the candidate and it seems each person has their own thread, I'll post it here.
The following is a summary of Thompson's views from a DMR article today.
I had no idea that he supports the National Sales Tax in lieu of a Federal Tax System AND cutting taxes AND fiscal responsibility. If true, he will be at the top of my list.
Now he just needs to declare. (he will over Labor Day is the thought) Fred Thompson on key issues IRAQ: Thompson voted in 2002 for the resolution authorizing President Bush to use military force in Iraq and has been a supporter of the president's strategy to send more troops to stabilize Baghdad and other areas this year.
Thompson has said he will reserve judgment about the long-term U.S. strategy until after Gen. David Petraeus reports next month on the effectiveness of the so-called surge. ABORTION: Thompson consistently voted in favor of abortion restrictions during his time in the Senate. A former law colleague of Thompson's said Thompson worked in the 1990s on behalf of a group working to relax restrictions on abortion. Aides have said Thompson may have been consulted by another lawyer in his firm who represented the group. HEALTH CARE: Thompson opposes a national health care system, but he also voted against medical savings accounts, a policy supported by President Bush. Thompson also opposed allowing patients to sue health management organizations and to collect punitive damages. ECONOMY, TAXES: Thompson has said he supports making the income tax cuts passed during the Bush administration permanent.
He has said he supports eliminating the tax code in favor of a 23 percent national sales tax, although aides have recently stepped back from that position. IMMIGRATION: Thompson opposes blanket amnesty for people in the United States illegally, but he also says it is unreasonable to expect officials to round up and deport an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants.
Thompson has said he supports a compromise that would allow illegal immigrants to work toward citizenship without putting them ahead of immigrants who abide by the law. -

I like Fred.. .but Duncan Hunter is tops in my list. So.... I suppose Fred is no. 2 in my book for President.
- keep.

- keep. Duncan Hunter for me too. I need to hear Thompson speak a lot more before I decide what I think of him. Support of the fair tax is a great start. -

OK so who do you think will be left standing and who do you think will be filler in the final election.

Re: Fred Thompson
Here's what I see happening: The democrats and republicans will both end up with candidates that are "electable", meaning towards the middle. That would likely be Giuliani or Romney on the republican side and Hillary on the democratic side. Hillary isn't really towards the middle, but she talks like it when necessary. I get the feeling that Giuliani will take it all. If his commercials are correct, I will be ok with him on defense and fiscal responsibility, but not much else. -
Re: Fred Thompson
Not to derail this thread, but I have a quick fair tax question - what happens to all of the accountants when the fair tax is instituted? Not to sound selfish but my wife is a CPA and if she can't find work, we're probably going to have to move to a trailer park on my salary.

Good CPA's will always be able to find work...tax lawyers are the ones that will be hurting (along with the politicians).

You have friendly neighbors and a close knit community. Better yet, get a house boat and sell macrame potholders out of it as you move it up and down the river.

Re: Fred Thompson
That's a good question. I think most businesses will need accounting services anyway. Just not to deal with the ever changing tax code. Maybe to help them become more efficient? Any major, major change like this is bound to create growth opportunities all over the place. -
Re: Fred Thompson
Or you could move to a VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER! -
Re: Fred Thompson
Has Fred ever done anything? Isn't he considered a lightweight Senator?
I think the wife is the one with the Swinging Richard in that marriage.
'tiny little text etched into her neck it said "jesus lived and died for all your sins." she's got blue black ink and it's scratched into her lower back. it said: "damn right i'll rise again." yeah, damn right you'll rise again.' -
Re: Fred Thompson
Mit Romney came and spoke at my business school last fall and I thought he was the man. He is by far the brightest of all the candidates and has excellent management skills that should be a huge improvement over any politician. I'll be very disappointed if its not him. I've sworn to transfer to my firm's London office if Hillary gets voted in.

Instead of being a CPA that does individual taxes which isn't necessary under the fair tax, CPA's will team with companies to help "account" for the national sales tax and help pay the government.

Re: Fred Thompson
It appears a Califronia attorney and donor to moveon.org and the Kerry campaign has linked the website www.imwithfred2008.com with KKK propoganda to try to smear Mr. Thompson. Pretty dispicable IMO. The website has quickly been shut down but here are some screen images. http://images.redstate.com/files/fakeklan1.JPG
