It seems that the Hawks are pretty fired up about Jamie. I guess, like us, they try to jump on any perceived slight by the in-state schools.
I think it is like people on here say, their fanbase is made up of many people who aren't a lot of UI grads. They sucked that market dry, and those people spend money just to say that they went to the games.
It's a rivalry, and as much as some of them want to down play that fact, these instances show that.
The problem has been that, especially in football, we have put all of our eggs in that one basket. The team was sky high to play the Hawks, but rarely, if ever, rose to that level of intensity. 05 is a perfect example, we got sky high to beat an overrated Iowa team. And yet with the best team in the division, we opened the 05 conference 0-3 (for the third straight year), with that damn loss to Baylor in the mix. Win that game, the
kNU game, the Missouri game, and we wouldn't have had to depend on CU falling apart so we could have the chance to choke away the Kansas game.
That's why, the "Iowa State's superbowl" talk had merit. And it allowed them to continue to belittle us, even though their season wasn't going as well as they expected. Also, the reason that with the same 7-4 records, they went to a NYD bowl, and we went to Houston.
