Is Kirk Ferentz fairly compensated ($2.7 million per year which makes him the highest paid coach in the Big 10)? If not should his salary be higher or lower? Is Ferentz one of the top five/ten/twenty active NCAA college football coaches?

I believe he is third in compensation behind Pete Carroll and Nick Saban. I'll do some looking on that though.

I was wrong. Bob Stoops and Nick Saban are ahead of Ferentz. Ferentz actually makes more than Pete Carroll as of November 2006, when this article was published: Contracts for college coaches cover more than salaries - USATODAY.com
You know, Pete Carroll of one undisputed National Championship and another disputed by LSU. And one beat-down of Iowa in the Orange Bowl.
Still looking for updated information.

It doesn't bother me if Alex Rodriguez makes $25 million a year because that's a private business. Ditto for other professional athletes. But at the university level, in athletics, I'm not sure that the types of salaries that people like Stoops, Saban, and Ferentz are justified. It seems that these escalating salaries will further separate the haves from the have nots.

Too much. Especially for all that he has (NOT) accomplished.

They go to good bowl games every year and their stadium is always filled. Seems like he's earning his coin to me.

There are restrictions on the number of scholarships that a college can offer. Why not limit the compensation of coaches?

No way did he earn his salary the last two years, but consistently winning 10 games a year for a few seasons before that, I would consider earning it. So, currently, no, he is not earning it.

I know that this is a source of great humor for many on here. But this is kind of similar to what we went through with Tim Floyd, and Larry Eustachy.
After his second year Tim went to 750,000, not a big deal now, but in 95, that was elite money. Larry went from 500 K his first year to 900K in 2000, and 1.1 M in 01, in fact I think that Larry was one of the first coaches over a million.
Why did we pay them so much??? Simple, to keep them. As much as we love Iowa State, and of course the great state of Iowa as well, there are other programs that can come in open up their checkbook and whisk them away. Look what we did with McDermott.
Hartzell, the UNI AD even had a special booster club to help increase Greg's salary. He made 200000K his last year, that is LOT of money for UNI to pay a coach.
I don't think that Kirk wants the NFL too badly right now, and his star is dimming slightly (Bill Walsh had a losing record at Stanford before he went to the 49ers, so they don't put much stock in a couple of down years). He's getting older, and I don't think that there are many jobs that would get him out of Iowa City. So I think that the comfort level is greater, and I don't think that there will be any contract renegotiations anytime in the near future, even if they have a great year this year.

It is also the fundraising mechanism the entire school relies on. If the team is winning, and donations are flowing in, then the coach is worth the pay.

There are limits on the number of assistant and graduate assistant coaches. In addition the number of scholarships are limited and there are all kinds of recruiting restrictions. If the NCAA is serious about curtailing expenses or achieving parody, salary caps for coaches would seem to be in order.
The absence of salary caps ensures that the "best" coaches end up at the big name schools and perpetuates the haves from the have nots.

One small thing that people leave out about comparing coaching salaries is location.
If you work at Wells Fargo and you are a Systems Engineer, you will make a ton more in LA than Des Moines Iowa, but they seem to not talk about that with coaching.
I guess I am saying that 2.7 Mil or whatever Ferentz makes probably goes really far in Iowa City compared to what Pete Carrolls 3 million in California. Just go and try and buy a 2 bedroom house in Cali.

Looking at his house, Kirk has a big carbon footprint also. Takes lots of buckaroos to live high off the hogs.
