I'd hate to be cub fan right now, watching them collapse. STLtoday - Sports - Columnists |

I have been waiting for this post. Haven't heard a word from a St Loser fan for over a month and suddenly a pitcher who nearly killed people in the press box a while a back hits a home run or two.

Knowing the Cubs haven't had their best player for over a week and another one of their top players for over a week, I'd say if the Cubs are within 4 games by the time Soriano returns, it's the Cubs to lose.

I would be SHOCKED if the Cards gain any ground this week. No matter what way you spin it, they are still 5 under .500, and have been near horrid on the road this year.

There's no way our beloved Cardinals are going anywhere this year, I'm sorry to say. I will cheer them on until the end, but I just don't think they can do it this year. Remember about a week ago when they took 3 of 4 from the Brewers and everyone in St. Louis said "look out, here we come" and then they lost 4 or 5 in a row. This is too much of a rollercoaster team to make a long enough run. We can only hope that the team rallies around Rick Ankiel and gets above .500

This is the worst Cardinals team I can remember in many, many years, but the Cubs are collapsing (again) and it's fun watching their fans sweat. And they are sweating. I'm off to polish my 10 (replica) World Series trophies.

The Cards have no chance in the central. This is LaRussa's best managing job in his career considering how awful that team is. Walt Jocketty should be embarrassed of the team he put on the field this year.

I think Walt does a fine job, it's Bill Dewitt that causes the problems. The Cardinals are one of the top-market teams in MLB and they only have a couple of super-star caliber players (Pujols and Carpenter when he's not hurt). They sell-out practically every series and have one of the highest attendance rates of all MLB teams this year, trailing only the Yankees, Dodgers, and Mets ( ESPN - MLB Attendance - Major League Baseball Attendance).
Dewitt tightens the strings on the budget so much, Jocketty can only afford has-been type players (See: Kip Wells, Mike Maroth, Adam Kennedy, etc) If the Cards were under an ownership which was more concerned about winning that money, it would be a different story.
I think them winning the WS last year was a death-sentence for this years team because Dewitt knew that a cheap, 83 win team could win the WS so there was no need to put more money into the team.

You make a good point about the purse strings. There's a lot of holes the Cards will need to fill in the next couple of years including center, third, second, shortstop and the closer. They also need starting pitching bad. If those roles are filled by more mediocre free agents the Cards won't be doing much for a few years.
