Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
Posted to my blog today a look at ISU's quarterback position this year. I think the performance we get from this position this year is more critical than the much discussed O-Line. There are two quarterbacks ahead of Austen on the depth chart...which one will play in 07?

Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
Call me crazy, but if the line performs as poorly as they did last season it wouldn't matter if we had Peyton Manning back there.
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
Did I miss something, I didn't see any mention of any other QB besides Meyer? I thought there was supposed to be mention of the 2-deep at QB and might answer the hint of who was ahead of Arnaud on the depth chart. Oh well.
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
I'm pretty sure he meant the Sophomore version of Meyer compared to the Junior version of Meyer because of the big differences between the two.
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
Granted our line was bad last year but it wasn't that great 2 years ago either. Meyer's performance did decline some last year and the line did not have everything to do with it. I'm tired of everyone using the line as an excuse, it's time for Meyer to step up or you are going to see Arnaud starting by the end of the year. Get rid of the ball quicker, make smarter passes, whatever but Meyer is just as much to blame for his own performance as the line was for protecting him.
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
Sorry mj, Austen is clearly #2, my word play was on which Bret Meyer shows up this this year. Austen is very talented, has the strongest arm on the team, but is just really green. As I said in my blog, there is no position in football where experience means as much as QB. Until you have snaps at game speed at a new level (college, pro) your development is often hindered unless you are truly a phenom. While Austen is very talented and ISU will be in great hands a year from now assuming he wins out over Bates, he isn't ready to lead this team yet. Hopefully, he will get enough snaps this year in mop up or in the case of the nearly inevitable dings that take the QB out for a few plays to gain some experience. Unless Brett regresses, he will be the guy. Which Bret, plays will go a long way in determining our success.
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
in my opinion line was bad last year, but maybe worse Bret's sophmore year. Peyton wouldn't win the Heisman behind our line last year, but he would have had a good year.
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
Our oline cant get any WORSE than last year.
But also remember how poor of an offensive scheme we ran.
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
The line should have been the same or better his junior year than sophomore with 4 returners and 10 out of 11 back on offense.
I think it ended up being a 3 headed monster.
1. The line play wasn't good.
2. Meyer didn't get rid of the ball and/or identify open receivers quickly.
3. Play calling didn't help with keeping the defense off balance or help with getting rid of the ball fast.
It wasn't always the line, it wasn't always Meyer, and it wasn't always the play calling.
Edit: I still don't get how it was so different from 05 to 06 after I just typed that. Maybe I need a number 4.
4. Defense didn't give the offense as good of field position and didn't score nearly as much to keep us in the game i.e. more weight was on the offense.
Also, WTF is the deal with the tight ends not pass blocking last year?
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
Phillip Bates will be the best scrambler.

If Peyton only got to work with 1/3 of the field at any given time and his stud receiver was rarely in that 1/3 of the field there is no way he'd be a Heisman QB either.
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
Hey J, is Bates as tough as they say? If so, could be an interesting battle next year. What do you see?

Until anyone can prove this 1/3 of the field BS enough with this! We'll find out soon enough here if it was Meyer or the play calling...
Re: Cyclone First Look - Quarterback
Tough to look ahead that far, but as a comment on my blog said, next year Austen & Bates will each have one year in McFarlands offense, both are athletic, both have very strong arms, both have good pedigrees. The one advantage that Austen has is even though they both will have one year in the new offense, Austen is currently getting a lot of reps as the number 2 qb. Reps for Bates are very limited right now and it won't get a lot better during the season as he moves to likely getting his snaps as the scout team qb. Barring injuries Bates won't get significant snaps to really get a feel for the offense and get comfortable until spring ball next year. If I had to guess, Austen will prevail, but Bates is the real deal and it is going to be fun to watch. Both will become better as they push each other.

I struggle with this 1/3 of the field stuff too, while I find it really hard to believe, I find it hard to believe how predictable our play calling was too. If true, which I still doubt, I am not sure if it shows more lack of confidence in Meyer or just incompetence in coaching.
