I haven't played in years, but I'm pretty sure you can throw breaking balls by holding left or right on the directional pad. And I believe you can slide to different spots on the rubber so you hit different parts on the plate.
When hitting, I'm pretty sure that you will try to hit it in the air and for power if you hold down while you swing.
