UNI game must be near sell-out
Not that I need tickets (please don't start e-mailing me with offers to sell), but I was checking the on-line ticket office and noticed that there were only single seat tickets available for the UNI game. It gave me a "best available" location of Section F, Row 30.
I guess when you sell 34,000+ reserved seats as season tickets, that makes sell-outs a little easier.
To be fair, I'm sure the in-state opponent has something to do with that as I was able to find a pair of Texas tickets down in the end zone (Section 3) in the 7th row.
Re: UNI game must be near sell-out
Didn't we set the attendance record with them last year? I'm not sure why people give a rip about this game so much but it seems to be a big money maker. If I remember right, the UNI game drew more than the Nebraska game a week later. Makes no sense to me, but anytime we can get 50k plus in JTS, I won't argue.

Probably because a healthy number of the 55K were fans of in-state school UNI? I think NU reset the record, seems to me we broke it then broke it again.
But I agree - I hate that game. AA opponent is a lose-neutral propostion for us. We win - were supposed to, doesn't help, nobody cares.
We lose (as in a FG being 10 feet more to the left last year) and the season is pretty much over before it even begins.
I'm not crazy about paying $50/ticket to watch us play a AA foe. Bu that's college football today. And in the end, as you stated, all JP saw was 55K butts in seats.
Re: UNI game must be near sell-out
I'm not a big fan of the game either. I'd rather not schedule them, but if we are, it needs to be the first game scheduled, kind of like a preseason Triscuit before hitting some real opponents the next several weeks. We should not be playing UNI the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th week.
Re: UNI game must be near sell-out
D1-AA or not, UNI is one of the better teams in their class. I don't find them to be that far off from a Kent State. If ISU is going to face a school we should defeat without question, I'd rather it be a school I know we can fill the stadium with vs. one we'll have only 2/3-3/4 of the seats filled.
Money talks...
Re: UNI game must be near sell-out
I think UNI is a better team to play then UNLV. They are better then UNLV, I enjoy the enviroment of the packed stadium and tailgating with the crowd they bring to the game. It is all good, unless they would beat us then it would be a horrible idea:unsure:

We also played UNI last year on Parents weekend. That helped out a lot too. Man we go from the parents weekend game going from UNI last year to Texas this year. Thats a huge difference in the quality of opponents.
Re: UNI game must be near sell-out
Well, opinions vary. You and 22 are most likely right in that year-in and year-out UNI is probably as good, if not better, than most lower 1A schools we'd play.
But they are a 1AA program. And that makes a loss just that much worse. If we are to play a 1AA school - as so many programs do anymore - I would insist it be a caliber of UNI as well as the fact they are an Iowa school. I just don't like the 1AA game, nothing against UNI.

And as a veteran fan of two such dark-days in ISU fb history, you need look no further to understand why I don't like that game.

I would rather play a another low- to mid-level BCS team and get some exposure (media and recruiting) in other parts of the country; teams like NC State, Georgia Tech, Arizona, Kentucky, etc.
Don't you think we were MUCH better off having played Florida State and lost (yeah, yeah... don't get me started), than beating a D1-AA school every year?

I completely agree. The loss to Florida State gets brought up more by non-local media sources than any win over Iowa ever did. Non-traditional games against other BCS opponents are almost as exciting as bowl games.
Re: UNI game must be near sell-out
I actually like playing No Iowa. Better an instate school than some directional school nobody has ever heard of and doesn't give a hoot about.
I would rather see 55,000 fans in the stands for the UNI game than two-thirds of that for a team that nobody cares to see.
I still think its better than the alternative.
I vote for I-State logo!!!!

I agree with this post.
Re: UNI game must be near sell-out
It's an intra-state game, which should be a fun, semi-friendly rivalry. We have a home game we should win nearly every year; they have an opportunity to knock off a BCS team. Both teams get a nice payday. Learn to enjoy this game, because I don't see it going away. Also, this thread sounds disturbingly similar to threads about ISU on the UofI boards. Yuck!
Re: UNI game must be near sell-out
I emailed JP with my opinion of the UNI game.
He made it readily clear that UNI will be an ongoing game.
Again, most of us who don't like the UNI game don't like because it's a 1AA game. Not in anyway because of UNI or any dislike for them. I actually like UNI, cheer for them anytime they aren't playing us. Can't say that about our feathered friends. In fact, when they play iowa, I'm probably one of the more ravenous Panther fans around.
Re: UNI game must be near sell-out
I would rather play UNI than Buffalo, Kent State, UNLV, etc. It's an intra-state game and puts butts in the seats as others have said.
Also losing to Buffalo, UNLV, etc. is just as embarrassing as losing to UNI.
