    Re: Where's the hype at?

There is no info coming out practices are closed and the only info people are getting are from interviews. Fans are really excited but don't know what to expect they want to get excited and think ISU is going to be a lot better but then they think about the 4-8 season last year. Then one consistant quote that is coming out is "they are doing well they are improving but they still have a ways to go." For Chizik and this staff that "ways to go" is a national championship level so yes they will have a ways to go for awhile. What gets me excited is that the coaching staff expects that championship level and will expect nothing less and they will work their tails and players tails off until the team gets there.

Right. Instead of media hype...the hype is where it belongs...

In season ticket sales and the quality of practices.

In other words, Iowa will have coverage the equivalent of the Peach and ISU will have coverage equivalent of a column on the third page... Nice

Oooh...aaah...if I lived in Rag territory, my TNP's (tingly, naughty parts) would be all tingly with anticipation.

(TNP is a catch phrase of the Church Lady. I use it here without her permission...)

It's pretty sad, the OWH gives nebraska more coverage than the Rag gives to ISU, iowa and UNI combined.

As for hype, I think Cyclone fans are cautiously optimistic. But Chizik is not saying anything to the press. The stories and interviews are there if the Rag would work at it though.

The Des Moines Register is our largest newspaper in the state and it is a complete joke!

My point/question is...is Iowa a football obessed state? Does the Iowa media drive the obsession when it comes to football?

The last couple of weeks, i've made a point to see what, if any coverage of Iowa St. and Iowa training camp is in the Register and it's rather sad. Every other newspaper throughout the Big 12 has ran season preview articles of every Big 12 teams...the San Antonio, Grand Island, NE, and Omaha newspapers come to mind as examples and you could say that Texas and Nebraska are football obsessed states. So were does Iowa rank?

I'm not attempting to flame, just asking an honest question.... Gene Chizik's first game as Iowa State's head coach is a week from tomorrow and where is the media hype? Gene Chizik must love it here in Iowa if only for the fact that the media coverage isn't as intense as it is in Austin TX or Auburn AL.
The thing is our local media...especially the register...are more interested in digging up dirt and hurting our program than hyping up a season and doing good ISU spreads. The only way they are able to do that is if something totally great is going on with UofI so they can bury the good ISU stuff in the 4-5th pages. Right now with bad things being printed about the gangs in the UofI program there is NO WAY the register is going to hype ISU.

Since on any given weekend there are around 120k to 130k people in stadiums at Ames and Iowa City, I think we're a pretty big football state.

You want to know the really ironic thing? My Hawkeye friends swear the exact opposite - that the Rag is a pro-ISU-anti-EIU paper. Now I don't agree with them whatsoever, however, I guess it just goes to prove that the Rag is out to **** everyone off

Garn- after growing up in Iowa and unfortunately living in NE for four years, I have perspective from both sides of the Missouri. The state of Iowa has a strong following in football, but I think Iowa is more balanced with basketball and wrestling being very popular as well. You will read Husker football articles in february in Nebraska, and very little hype for NU hoops, whereas basketball is followed quite well in Iowa. I was in Iowa last weekend for a wedding and the DM Rag had a full section on Iowa's football roots, covering players from high school to the pro's.

I grew up in eastern Iowa, and trust me, the CR Gazette follows the Hawkeyes not unlike the OWH covers the huskers. One of the gazette's columnists (Mike Hlas) will have mundane pointless articles about Iowa football in May, similar to Tom Shatel.
I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

    Re: Where's the hype at?

I'd be fine with less hype and more enthusiam/excitement. Let's face it, in the W/L collumn we can't expect much this year but we have every reason to be excited about a new coach and a new era in Cyclone football. With no high expectations riding on the season as in past years it should hopefully keep the team lose and we can see Chizik's system begin to develop. I don't think the W/L collumn is where success will be measured this year although the more W's we get that definately will help but I think most people want to see improvements from week to week and see us improve in areas we were terrible in last year such as the line play on both sides and the running game. If we play hard-nosed football and cut down on the mistakes (especially all the negative yardage plays on offense) I think we'll set a nice foundation in place to build on.

As Gene has said, it's all about changing the thinking and attitudes that we can win at Iowa State and putting in the effort to get to reach that goal. We may not have the talent to win immediately but if the effort is there at least we can hopefully stay in games that were usally over by halftime or soon after and not throw in the towel.

    Re: Where's the hype at?

I think one poster was right on in saying that the lack of Iowa print coverage is a relection on how GC is controlling information. Overall, I think that's smart.
Compare that to the idiot in Minnesota. There are 2-3 stories everyday in the Minneapolis and St. Paul papers. Everybody is great, every player will be an All-American, Minnesota will win the Big Ten, etc... He even steals catch phrases from Viking coaches. Thank God the idiot "didn't get excited about the Iowa State program".
Media coverage is important to the fans and does help with recruiting. The lack DSM Rag coverage isn't too big of a deal as not too many players in Texas, La, Ga., Al., and Fla. read the once great newspaper.
