Where's the hype at?
I don't know how to phrase this, but bear with me as this is coming from a Husker fan:
A week from tomorrow is Gene Chizik's first game as ISU's head coach...where in the hell is the hype? Where is the media coverage? The Des Moines media ought to be all over this. The last 2 days has produced more Hawkeye coverage from the Des Moines media than what there has been all month.
My point/question is...is Iowa a football obessed state? Does the Iowa media drive the obsession when it comes to football?
The last couple of weeks, i've made a point to see what, if any coverage of Iowa St. and Iowa training camp is in the Register and it's rather sad. Every other newspaper throughout the Big 12 has ran season preview articles of every Big 12 teams...the San Antonio, Grand Island, NE, and Omaha newspapers come to mind as examples and you could say that Texas and Nebraska are football obsessed states. So were does Iowa rank?
I'm not attempting to flame, just asking an honest question.... Gene Chizik's first game as Iowa State's head coach is a week from tomorrow and where is the media hype? Gene Chizik must love it here in Iowa if only for the fact that the media coverage isn't as intense as it is in Austin TX or Auburn AL.

Re: Where's the hype at?
If our local media was ranked like recruits, we would be stuck with a lot of NR's or division two prospects. I mentioned it the other day in a post. It is ridiculous, with so little to talk about during the summer sports season, that we don't see more coverage just to find something to talk about. -
Re: Where's the hype at?
Yeah, I don't know. I think we will start to see things pick up on Monday.
So are the way of things in the 'Hawkeye State'. Only winning can change some things.

Re: Where's the hype at?
I think that the lack of information and reporting is because GC is controling the flow of the information.
-
Re: Where's the hype at?
Some of the answer is that Gene is much more private than our previous coach and his demenor is a lot different. He's new as well so you combine all those things and the media doesn't have a lot of material to work with.
Maybe it would be nice to get a little more attention, but it will come soon enough when we start winning.

Who gives a rip how much the media covers us!!! I'm pumped and I know there are a lot more of you just counting down the days until we get to taste the football atmosphere again!!! “Also, I met a lot of Iowa State fans and I don’t want to leave any of that behind.” - DARIUS DARKS on Staying a CLONE!!!

Re: Where's the hype at?
If the national wire services, can't supply the story, then the RAG, probably won't print it. The paper is packed with NBA, Hockey, and baseball from the old fashioned wire services. Wire stories are often the sports front page along with a photo. There is little actual reporting on statewide sports stories. We also have a big ten school, UNI, and Drake, and many small colleges too numerous to mention. I am sure nebraska has more than 5 or 6 collegiate football teams, I just can't think of any more. The OWH does an excellent job with their Iowa edition. I believe the OWH owns the Ames newspaper. Just some random thoughts. As for the Huskers, "break a leg" -

Keith Murphy= 4 star
Heidi Soliday= 2 star, very overrated in this market IMO but she's got experience.
John Walters= 3 star, pushing 4.
Sean Keeler= 1 star
Jon Miller = 1 star
Marty Tirrell= 2 star
Kenny Miller= 2 star
Larry Cotlar=3 star(Iowa sportscaster of the year, gotta give him 3 stars for the hardware)
Chris Williams= 1 star, up and comer will eventually top out at 3 star in future.
Brent Blum= 1 star, will probably top out at 2, MAYBE 3 stars with a break or two.
Shawn Terrell= 1 star
Randy Peterson= 1 star on Scout, 2 star on Rivals.
Rest of DSM Rag team= 1 star
I'm sure I left some out, just went off the top of my head. Yes, I'm bored.

Re: Where's the hype at?
Actually, the lack of coverage is indicative of how pathetically incompetent the established media are.
Any population center that lets such horrible drive time radio as Cotlar and JonDMiller mumble incoherently into a microphone is a very, very uncompetitive market.

The days of self promotion are over. It's a new time, Bob is correct on this point.
We are Iowa State, and we are here to compete. Will we win all the time, no, but we will show up for 60 minutes (at least), and make you beat us. We are not spending any time looking for reasons to not accomplish, we will only accept the best efforts, from Jamie Pollard, hell President Geoffrey, on down.

I'm sure I left some out, just went off the top of my head. Yes, I'm bored. I'm not sure it's fair to rank all these people based on the material they cover. Usually, it's not the decision of the "talent." The establishment is more to blame.
For some reason, it is acceptable here to barely cover the major university programs and rarely even mention the smaller programs. Even mid-sized UNI and Drake (in its own city!) are almost completely ignored, by the Register especially. Forget about the small colleges.
The Register has the potential to be the de facto state newspaper. Too bad the content is so poor they can barely sell it in Polk county.
If you want to see better ISU sports coverage, try the Omaha World Herald or the Kansas City Star.
Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man. -
Re: Where's the hype at?
They hype is there....just look at the 20% increase in season ticket sales.

If you want to see better ISU sports coverage, try the Omaha World Herald or the Kansas City Star. Even the QC Times has better ISU sports coverage than the DM Rag. It must have REALLY gone downhill the last 5 years because I don't ever remember it being THAT BAD when I was going to school (although it still wasn't great).

I'm sure I left some out, just went off the top of my head. Yes, I'm bored. Yeah, I should've made that qualification in my statement. Murph and Walters don't belong lumped in with the others. -
Re: Where's the hype at?
Murph is so good I remember a time him being offered a spot with ESPN. He turned it down because of the quality of life for his family and the quality of education in the Des Moines area compared with out east. Family-wise, great decision. Career-wise, means he's probably "topped out."
