Douglas and Bowman Select an Attorney
Per the CR Gazette:
"According to court documents, Petrzelka waived preliminary hearings for both athletes, which were scheduled for Sept. 6. The players were charged Sunday with unauthorized use of a credit card, a felony. They face up to five years in prison for the offense."
It appears Bowman and Douglas may not be available for at least several games. It should take several weeks to get an actual court date. Former UI player to represent Douglas, Bowman | GazetteOnline.com - Cedar Rapids, Iowa City -

When is the Barta/KF presser? Is that today? Can't wait to hear the "We are waiting for the legal process to run it's course.." line.

Re: Douglas and Bowman Select an Attorney
Just looking at it, these players aught to be tossed now - end of story for Iowa. The legal system can do what they want and Iowa can move on.
However, what if the two are found innocent (unlikely...yet...assume)? I wonder if one of the reasons coaches use the "legal system run its course" line is to protect themselves and the school from a lawsuit - should they decide to kick a player off the team for something they were eventually cleared of.
Who knows...I just think that's one of the reasons.
I still would like to see KF give 'em the boot - firm and quick.

Iowa City D.A.s Hawk homers?
The crack investigative reporters at the Rag are saying that the District Attorneys are not inclined to involve the Feds with this credit cardgate case. Is this accurate?
My first thought when reading this was-- if this was an ISU player dealing with the Ames/Story County legal system-- how long would it take for the phone to ring in the Federal Prosecutor's office?

Re: Iowa City D.A.s Hawk homers?
From what I've heard the entire Iowa legal system are hawk homers. Tons of them are part of the I club and stuff.
I'm expecting the defence lawyers to pull out the famous chewbacca defence and they will get a differed judgement. Which if they actually learn not to steal...is fine by me.

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man. -

I agree with what you said, but it got me thinking. Didn't this happen within the past 3-4 years with Mac here? I thought he had kicked someone off the team for something they had done, but then they weren't found guilty or charged in the end. I can't remember what player it was, but he never saw the cardinal and gold again.

It just so happens that the U.S. attorney for the 5th district (which includes Johnson County) is Matt Whitaker, a former Hawkeye football player. Of course, his comment was "I won't say anything about the matter." I'd say the landscape looks pretty favorable for Douglas and Bowman!!

Re: Douglas and Bowman Select an Attorney
I hope someone in the media checks into how they're paying for their legal representation. Wouldn't want them to receive illegal benefits from a former player.

Re: Douglas and Bowman Select an Attorney
If a former Hawkeye judge who happens to be an Iowa booster rules in favor of these two clowns in a situation where he would normally find them guilty, wouldn't that be an issue with compliance? As we've all learned from the Compliance Linebacker commercial, any athlete receiving benefits that a normal student wouldn't ordinarily get is in violation of NCAA compliance.

It would be interesting, however, to see the Compliance Linebacker issue some of his own brand of justice to said judge.
