Devin McDowell

So it's the week of the first game and I see McDowell listed as the backup RCB. The kid could very well be the starter by season's end.

However, if you recall, back in April - McDowell was one of 2 other Cyclones involved in a 5th degree theft. The sentence was a fine (court ordered payment plan).

http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/...ged-theft.html (Confirmed: McDowell, Vargas & Montgomery charged with theft)

Since that happened, we have not heard about what punishment was levied by Chizik. It would seem to me, game suspension was not part of it.

I'm not saying a suspension was in order, I don't know the details of the crime nor do I know what these players had to do over the summer in order to remain on the team. I do know Vargas didn't make it, either being kicked off or choosing to depart rather than go through whatever Chizik enforced.

The point of my post is, often times we look at cases where players of other teams make mistakes and to the outside eye, get barely a slap on the wrist.

To the outside eye, it would appear McDowell received a similar type of slap. From what we know of Chizik, it's doubtful that was the case - however - no one knows.

It's easy to forget when other programs are dealing with delinquent players that appear to be getting a free ride or special treatment, it can easily be perceived some of our own are getting the same.

and it is likely that our rivals to the east will simply forget about their own players transgressions for the moment and rub our faces in the mud, and the world will continue to turn. i'm not going to stop taking jabs at a competitor when the opportunity arrises just because there may be future altercations within our own program.

From the looks of it, I'm betting he plays. And I hope he does, I can only imagine what Chizik put him through for that mistake.

The thing is, from the outside it appears he got a free ride. Something we get on coaches from other programs for doing.

There is a big difference between a simple misdemeanor and a felony.

'But I love the idea of the Sacrificial Lamb. . . There are consequences to actions. The point of the death of Christ is that Christ took on the sins of the world, so that what we put out did not come back to us, and that our sinful nature does not reap the obvious death. That's the point. It should keep us humbled. . . It's not our own good works that get us through the gates of heaven.'

No doubt. The recent scenario in Iowa City isn't the outside case I'd be referring to. There are smaller ones that have arose in Iowa City and Lincoln the last year or two that have upset Cyclone fans - when a player doesn't seem to be dealt with in a firm manner.

22, how dare you not be like a Hawk fan who would excuse, mitigate, cover-up and rationalize any and all infractions committed by one of their players.
