Who's in back

There always seems to be the case every year that some teams are indecisive on certain positions heading into the first, second or even last games of the year. Well ISU is in the same boat with their RB position, and its noted that Chizik wont know who starts until today for the game on Thursday. Now, is this a good move?

Some of positions that always seem to be unknow, the most popular is the QB position. This is more crucial than RB as they're the ones who run the show out there, but is it a good idea to hold out this long on a starter at RB?

Pros- I would say that this is a great move because it keeps the position competitive all the way through to the last practice. In our case, there are three very qualified players who could "spot" start at any point and still hold the composer necessary to make an impact on the field. Now in days, multiple back teams are making more of a pressence, so even having a "starter" doesn't justify anything in terms of stabability on the initial 11 players that take the field.

Cons- The main question is who is your go to guy. Its 3rd and 1 on the opponents 45 with 35 seconds to go in the game. You need this drive to stay alive as you are down by 6. Who do you bring in to step up in this situation? Well since there is no definate starter, the choice could become more difficult then it needs to be. You could look back on the day and see who has had the most success, but it doesn't mean that they can take that pressure and come through on the other side. Plus, every player has their style. Stevie Hicks liked to dance, Ryan KocH ran straight ahead, and this means adjustments for both the RB and and the Offensive Line. Familiarity thus becoms an issue.

So what would do?

Re: Who's in back

I like the fact that we don't have a true #1 going into the first game. It seems the running backs in the last few years have been over-hyped during the preseason, and everyone was really dissapointed when they didn't produce. This takes some of the pressure off the running backs.

I don't think its a bad thing at all. I like knowing that who performs will be on the field vs. you started game one so barring major injury you're our starter game ten.

Re: Who's in back

Speaking of Koch and Hicks, I would travel back in time and threaten McCarney with the thought of losing his job. He would immediately bench Hicks and play Koch, no matter the down and distance. Koch just ran harder, always.
