Iowa FB today's DMR, creates questions.
Iowa FB article today's DMR. Nelson, backup qtrbk. shown with a fistful of money previously, says it's all legal. It was grant money for low income families. 1) My understanding is Pell Grants are given directly to the U., not to the student. 2)How did he qualify for Pell Grant, if he reported scholarship money? Or does the U. refund grant money to the student if bills are paid? Or was this source other than Pell Grant? 3) Also, is Nelson and others still qualifying for the low income rental properties too? Too many red flags! Very suspicious! -

I believe, if you have more aid than is required for your university bill, that money is deposited into your checking account, or whatever account you have set up with the university

That was what I was going to say. Why are they still standing there with fan out cash? I think its ok for those guys to get some grants, but to then take the money out of their checking account and fan it out seems wierd.
Make sure you don't call the charge. But make sure you call the foul on the scrum.... -

Actually, the U of I writes a check for the un-used amount of any grant. When I was a student there, once my bills were payed, they sent me a check for the remaining money to spend on books, food, what not. If somebody doesn't have a checking account, then they have to cash the check.
Just because you wouldn't fan out your grant money to have pictures taken and posted on Facebook doesn't mean nobody else would..... The artist formerly known as SouthernHawk -

Which, by the way, is what my answer would be if they were a Hawk or a Cyclone or anyone else for that matter.

I think his point from above is that these kids are supposed to be getting full rides through their sports scholarships, so if that's the case why are they still getting grants such as these that could be used to help students that actually need the money. Him flaunting the money around seems like a slap in the face to those kids that need the money.

It is amazing what you can get grants for. I have one friend who made it to the 2nd week of basic training in the air force and then dropped out. Awhile after that, he tried college (again) and got a grant for having been in the military (*gasp*). If the money is available, you can't blame the students for taking it. Should the money be available? probably not because they are on a full ride - change the grant rules instead of harping on the students.

Maybe Nelson should use that extra money for Greyhound tickets to go back home to deal with his court charges.
