Defensive Philosophy

I am really curious to hear from some coaches and not fan know it alls here, but how would have gone about stopping their running game last night.

It really seemed hard to me. They would runn their 4'2" running back up the middle so we start hitting the middle. But then they would option the QB outside. So we would go outside. Then the RB would look like he would go back to the middle but manage to crawl through and get outside again. he spun all night, and we got choped block on everything. Do know how to jump?

Clearly he was 4' 4".

I don't know - to answer your question. There was alot of speed in that backfield. And small speed to boot, making it harder to keep track of them. My biggest disappointment on that front was that we didn't seem to have good outside containment and end discipline. Not sure why, but we would often stall the run in the middle and backfield, then they would bounce outside for a nice gain.

I guess on the upside, they didn't have many long runs. But it was death by a thousand cuts.

i was really dissapointed with our d-line. they seemed to get no pressure on the quarteback and we didnt have any penetration on running plays.

We were getting pushed around up front. A big twelve school should not be pushed around by a MAC school no matter what.

I think our D-line is rather undersized (except Tuba of course) and it showed. They got pushed around quite a bit. This was also evident in our complete lack of pressure on their QB most of the time. About all I think could really have been done from a coaching standpoint was to blitz more and/or move more guys into the box.

Our d-line is not going to cut it. They are the best we have but it's painfully obvious how far behind physically we are. I didn't expect world beaters at this point but Kent State absolutely manhandled our guys from the get go. If Kent State had their way, I hate to think what Texas and OU will do. Ouch.

It was weird to see the mass substitutions on defense, instead of subbing in a player or two, they subbed in entire units(Taylor, Rubin, Braaksma, Parker)/(Frere, Johnson, Weir, Lyle) and (Banks, Smith, Bowen)/(Schmidgall, Bibbs, Garrin). I don't think the coaches really know who are best players are, but the game was a great test for them.

Off-topic... but WOW, Rashawn Parker laid the SMACK DOWN on their QB in the 4th quarter when he sacked him. Where was this kind of pressure the rest of the game?

They either handed off/ or passed it to the RB, or the QB would option/scramble. Not to hard to play 11 0n 2.

See I think they got some pressure on the QB, but faced one who ran more than most QB's in the NCAA. There wont be many more QB's like that they face, so if will be curious to see how well they do against a pocket passer.

But my question is, how do you stop that? What would you have done differently? If you were a D coordinator, how would you handle that?

They could have used a LB to shadow the QB I spose. Ace could have laid down the law. The linebackers were often so far back in coverage that their QB could get 5 yards before they had a shot at him. That said, I trust Chizik to coach defense a lot more than myself.

Defense is where I expected this team to really be improved. It is great to have a mind like Chizik in charge of this team. But I must say, I was let down by them. They seemed to be one step slow, and let their QB get out and run way too much.

Gene is still trying to get a feel for all of our players.

Right as soon as he came in here he had to re-recruit all of the players we already had on the roster essentially.

It'll work itself out, you could say that game was somewhat like an NFL preseason game.

I agree, that's why it's nice to have the non-conference games at the beginning of the schedule instead of at the end (hence Iowa).

Contain came to mind, and there were times we did, but they seemed to chop block all the time, thus allowing them to still get outside. Plus I will hand it to the guy, both those guys had quick feet. The QB juked like crazy, and the RB just kept spinning.

I like the idea of sneaking up the Safties, but they did burn us a couple times long, just completeing those were a different story. My thought was this:

Play man to man as mentioned above, but spread out the LBs to cover outside. Then bring the safties up to help with the middle. Just what I do in the video games.
