Re: Hawks sluggish so far

Wow........I was listening to Zabel and Miller for a minute or so tonight, and they didn't say the score, but from the way they talked, I was thinking Iowa must have ran away with it in the second half. Then I look at the score, and see 16-3. From what I saw, they have a very good defense (though maybe not completely tested today) and a pretty bad offense. Sure, they were able to get the running game going, but NIU really couldn't do much to keep their defense off the field either.

Did Jake play better than Bret?

EIU is the other Okoboji University for serious students and home of Captain Kirk who pilots the Enterprise on its Trek through the Universe for finding his next great job. Captain, beware of your Superbowl.

About 150 yards, 1 TD throw, and the official drop ball count for the receivers was 7, and no interceptions.

Defense looked good, otherwise I wasn't impressed at all. Its been awhile since I've seen their special teams look that awful.

Jake will definitely do alright in his Iowa career, though.

The special teams were terrible. No denying that. The kicking game alone cost the Hawks 4 usually automatic points, and a terrible kick-off gave NIU good field position right before the half ended to get a FG.

There's some work to do, but I was excited to see the offense at least show some sort of spark and take care of the ball. It's been a while since I've been able to say that after watching a Hawkeye game.

The way Kent State ran on us, it's difficult to imagine a scenario in which Iowa doesn't run all over us.

Unless Cpt Kirk, yet again, stops doing in the second half, what worked in the first.

When has he done that? If you say last year, wrong, because the Hawks were 0-4 after trailing at the half. KF is a good game coach, when his team is willing to do what he says.

Weren't they trailing to ISU at the half?

Save us tonight, the last hope for all of us,
Light-years gone by, we're still holding on,
Save us tonight, a star shines in all of us,
Far beyond our lives, still our glory lives on.

Re: Hawks sluggish so far

Iowa played pretty conservatively yesterday. They did not need to open a bag of tricks b/c NIU was not going to march down the field and score. Only jake could have lost that game for Iowa by throwing an INT back for a TD.

I am afraid that Mitch King might hurt Meyer or Arnaud (depends who is playing by then). Overall with only 3 WR's and a young QB on the road, Iowa played pretty well. But at the sametime NIU was not much of a threat to beat them. Let's see how Jake handles a little pressure and a team that can spread Iowa's defense out.

Ummm, how long have you been hawkfan(tm)?

Isn't the story for hawkfan(tm) that Iowa puts 250 yards rushing on ISU in the first half, and then runs 3 running plays (for loss) in the second half, losing the game?

Not smack, but from watching ISU-Iowa games in the past, one of the main complaints against KF from hawkfan(tm) has been that KF goes away from what works in the second half, causing them to lose ISU's "Superbowl" game?

How can Tommy from Des Moines be wrong?

NIU is pathetic compared to past teams.

I think Iowa had a string of 31 games (from the ISU game in 2002 through the Michigan loss in 2004) that they won after leading at half time. So I'm not sure that KF has a "bunch" of complaints that he loses games after the half.

The biggest thing that people complain about is conservative play calling in hurry-up situations. But part of that blame can also be put on KOK.
