Sub-divisions? What?
Okay, I just heard today about this whole "sub-division" thing. Why change Division I-A, and I-AA? What exactly are these new "sub-divisions"?
Honestly, now it's just plain confusing.
Passing: 124/273, 1560 yds, 8 TDs
Rushing: 441 yds, 3 TDs
Receiving: 98 Rec, 1106 yds, 3 TDs -
Re: Sub-divisions? What?
Agreed. As I posted in the CFB: Week 1 thread-
Since when did "Football Bowl Subdivision" and "Football Championship Subdivision" replace "D-1" and "D-1AA"? Having fancy names is all well and good, but those things are really cumbersome to say and easy to confuse verbally. I'm not a fan, and will continue to refer to them by their sensible names.

Re: Sub-divisions? What?
I also hate the new names. Just appears to me as a candy coating to make the lower division seem like it's not as bad. Although we now know teams like Appalachian State can sneak up on 1-A powerhouses like Michigan and win when they're napping, other 1-AA teams would never be able to stand a chance because of the talent divide.
If someone corrects me when I say 1-A or 1-AA in the future, I'm going to smack them. -
Re: Sub-divisions? What?
It's already turned into an "artist formerly known as 'Prince'" thing...
Pretty much all commentators are saying the "former" D I-A and "former" D I-AA so they don't have to deal with "Bowl" Division and "Championship" Division. I can't imagine this lasting two or three more seasons.

Re: Sub-divisions? What?
Very poor choice in naming them, I agree. I'm not sure if they were trying to make Div. II sound better or what. I'm still not sure why they can't just go I, II, III, IV -

We don't want to risk hurting anybody's self esteem. This is just more "politcially correct" nonsense like many states do for high schools. Can't have classes named A, B, C, D, E because that will hurt the self-esteem of those who aren't in class A, so we call them class 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A so that everybody gets to be in class A.

Huh, I never knew that. Makes sense. See, I don't mind that because it's still based on a strict (though arbitrary) numbering system that is easy to say and think about. Nobody gets confused and thinks a class 4A school is really tiny. These new football things are specifically eschewing the number system in favor of muddying the waters with words.

Re: Sub-divisions? What?
As far as I'm concerned, it's Division I-A and Division I-AA.

Re: Sub-divisions? What?
Many of the announcers or broadcasters kept referring to it as Division 1-AA but then had to correct themselves. The Appie State coach did during his interview after the game.

Seriously though, not all name changes are bad; just the ones that confuse people.

Re: Sub-divisions? What?
I kinda like it - only because it put an empathsis on the fact that some college football teams have a real championship and playoff.

Re: Sub-divisions? What?
I think we should change it to "Division I-A" and "The Who Gives a $#!* Division(s)???, Except When Michigan Loses In The "Big House" To a Lesser Conference Opponent." It is a bit of a mouth full, but I think it is kind of catchy... -
