Re: I gave Jon Miller's show another chance and...
Slight thread drift here, but, is JonDMiller and KXNO the only sports radio option you have in the greater Des Moines area? Do you have access to ESPN radio or any other competitor?

Re: I gave Jon Miller's show another chance and...
Gotta love ESPN Radio...but if you want it in the DSM area - you gotta have satellite radio.
Fortunately there's XM in my car.

. Gotcha. I always wondered why everyone complained when they could just turn the station. But you have no stations to turn to. -

I absolutely love sports and talk radio (especially sports radio) but Cotlar is just as unbearable as Jon Miller and I'm not a big Jim Rome fan so I basically listen to Out of Bounds because I like Sheman and JDub (I think the format of their show is just average) and I listen to Marty and Miller (who I think has the best radio program I listen to). I can't stream at work or get a decent satellite signal anymore. -
Re: I gave Jon Miller's show another chance and...
The sports radio options in Des Moines sound pathetic.
I fly into DSM tomorrow (for the UNI and EIU games), I'll have to hear for myself next week...

Re: I gave Jon Miller's show another chance and...
Yup, the one sports state is owned and run by the same people who broadcast the old fogie crap at WHO and their hawkeye propaganda tends to run over onto the sports station.

Re: I gave Jon Miller's show another chance and...
Jon's show in the football season isn't worth listening to, unless you are a Hawk fan. Too many times it turns into Hawktalk, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles. It seems to even out during basketball season and that's when I'll resume listening.
For now I'll stick with Marty and Miller for my afternoon delight. Gotta love Kenny admitting to his viagra use.

With all that is going on in sports; The Iowa/SU game, the ISU/UNI game, the start of the NFL season, the playoff race in baseball, etc; what does he talk about for 40 minutes of his show?
-He leads his show for the first 15 minutes or so talking about 1 single question from Ferentz radio show which was a caller asking why a certain freshman didn't play more against NIU. This was discussed for 15 whole minutes.
-John Cougar Meloncamp. Playing the guitair. Giving away tickets. This consumed nearly a mind-numbing 20 minutes.
The only remotely interesting part was he had some guy that runs a Syracuse fan site. Jon was bashing the message board crowd for claiming they know more than a coach does because of recruiting rankings and a couple of open practices yet he brings in a message board administrator to talk about the Iowa/Syracuse game...hmmm.
I don't even care that he didn't talk about ISU, I just cared about trying to stay awake! If his show can't be interesting the day of the 1st NFL game, an instate showdown between ISU and UNI, and Iowa's 1st homegame...when can he be?
I tried but just can't listen.
Sounds like how Tony Cornheiser was fired from ESPN. He talked about what he had done the day before with no sports. He then got smart and has studied hard for MNF.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: I gave Jon Miller's show another chance and...
I like Jon's show a lot of the time. A lot of it is funny and entertaining. But there are days when he can't help himself, and the full blown Hawkeye BS comes through loud and clear. And there are also times when he sets ISU up to knock them down. Those are the days when I just click over to something else. But he has his moments when he will give the Cyclones credit too. -

I thought Jon sounded a little uncomfortable and cut the guy off, he was one of John's buddies, helping pick the games. I really thought it was un called for I have usually defended him here... Must've been "Wolfgang." The tool of tools.
To whoever said that Jon's show is ending up at about 70-30 Hawk Talk, I'd say that's about right. But hey, who else has time to call his show in the middle of the afternoon besides the Hawk Fans running their paper routes and sitting in the break room at BK?
I truly think Jon needs someone to bounce things off of a bit more than just what Corey brings. Someone like Brent Blum or Chris Williams, in studio with him. He'll come in and say that his ratings are great and blah blah blah, but having a Cyclone presence on the show would keep me from changing the station as quickly as I usually do, and I know it'd be the same way for other ISU fans.

Re: I gave Jon Miller's show another chance and...
When Deace was one KXNO I'd say at least 50% of calls were from ISU fans. Now it's about 80% Hawkeye callers. Of course a lot of those 80% end up slamming the Cyclones. I think the majority of Cyclones have just turned off but they are still getting good ratings. I guess that's what happens when you have the only sports radio in town.

Re: I gave Jon Miller's show another chance and...
For those that have never listened, here is what a typical 2 hours is like.
10 minutes of talking about his daughter
10 minutes talking about either his religion or the fact that he doesn't drink any longer
10 minutes of talking about Jamie Pollard. Usually good but always finds a way to somehow slam ISU with a smartass coment.
30 minutes of commercials
30 minutes talking about his music career. He'll tell you to go to facebook or whatever and listen to his crappy singing (yes I went there). Now you can hear about jonmillerband.com. He really needs to get over this. Maybe his guitar playing can improve but his singing and song writing skills suck. On top of this why do I care?
30 minutes talking about the Hawks. Obnoxious callers including Tommy calling in and always saying things like "JOOOOOOONNNNNN I'm a hawkeye fan but ...". Everytime I hear Tommy I can just picture the phone with like 2lbs of old spit on the mouthpiece.
There you go. You now have listened to Jon Miller.

There you go. You now have listened to Jon Miller. That summary is right on. About 40 minutes of actual sports talk sounds about right.
