The next Seneca for ISU....
I think it's Phil Bates. Look at the logic. Bates is NOT being red shirted, he was in the Kent State game already. The coaches see something there. He big, fast and could put the option into the I State offense, something sorely missing. And this is a smart guy, 3.2 GPA and 27 ACT. Could be some new excitement ahead!
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
We are now comparing ACT scores ?
What was Seneca's ?
What was Meyer's ?
I would say let's get an athlete on the field if that's what he is... but I'm looking for Meyer to bounce back and still have a good senior season. Not quite ready for RS freshman under center if Meyer can learn quickly to not throw those killer interceptions.. grant it... short rope... but still been through the big 12.
Go clones !
ACT's not very reliable I've seen....
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
My point, having a QB that can read defenses can be an asset. A 3.2 GPA shows he a pretty good student. I see that as a plus. And he's a true freshman, not a RS.
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
If we lose on Saturday (God Forbid) I may jump on the young qb bandwagon. We have to play Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and the rest of the best conference in the world. Maybe it is time to have a qb ready for the next couple of years as we make the next step to perennial Big 12 North Contender!
If Meyer beats EIU, he has the job for the rest of the year.
I do have confidence in Chizik that the right man for the program now and in the future will play, be it Meyer, Arnaud or Bates.
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
I think it may be just a bit early to be comparing Bates to Seneca, seeing as Bates hasn't thrown a pass yet...this is something Hawkeye fans are notorious for, making rediculous comparisons and hyping up recruits. I am not calling you a Hawkeye fan but let's tone down the hype machine a little until we see more.
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
Bates can still redshirt, he has not played in a conference game. He can only play in a certain % of nonconference quarters and still redshirt.

Paul Shirley was book smart, didn't make him a better athlete or student of the game. There are two different kind of smarts when comparing books and athleticism. Also, how in the world do you call him the next Seneca when he hasn't played a down at quarterback and is most likely behind A-squared on the depth chart? Kinda a pointless thread.

He can only get a medical redshirt, if he gets hurt, for this year now that he has played.
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
After talking with people close to the team, it is clear that they are trying to put the ball in his hands as often as they can early because he is the real deal.
They wouldnt give him the ball on third down behind late if they didnt trust him.
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
If he can change the play at the line of scrimmage and check off to secondary receivers, he has my vote.
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
There will NEVER be another Seneca Wallace at ISU, he was one of a kind...but a player in his mold, I BELIEVE is Jerome Tiller. Phillip Bates is a stud, but I think Jerome seems to be the "throw better on the run" type of guy like Seneca was.
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
I think Bates will be great, but I will wait until he has positive yards from scrimmage before I dub him the next legend.

The next Seneca? Pretty naive to think there is going to be "the next" so and so. You might not have noticed, but LEGENDS like Seneca, Troy Davis and Jamaal Tinsley don't come around every year. What does come around every year is another fool claiming Drew Tate is the next Chuck Long, Shawn Taggart is the next Cato, or Josh Johnson is the next Ennis Haywood. :chatterbox:
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
I'm still not sure why everyone has a man crush on Seneca. Good QB yes... Great, not really. I know Seneca his senior season was the only offense we had, but he made alot of forced errors. I'm not exact on his stats but didn't he have 5 fumbles against Oklahoma, not exactly great. Or the high number of interceptions throughout the season. He made some highlights but he did fall apart alson.
Why do we need to keep having him as the standard comparison. I'll take SAGE anyday.
Re: The next Seneca for ISU....
i dont think bates is the next seneca. Arnaud will most likely be the qb of the future. i think if any recruit looks like seneca is is bj daniels. the florida dual threat qb. but arnaud is a better qb. bates is a better athlete and more likely to switch positions
