Re: hittin the juco trails
last years jucos were only 2 star for the most part though. these are all in the top 50. not saying we would win a national title next year with em but it would definately be an improvement

Re: hittin the juco trails
I could see using about 8 to 10 scholarships a year on jucos, for maybe the first three years or so. No more than that. You might hit on some great ones, but it's no way to build a long term success. -

Blaes, Tate and Alvarez have not played. McMahon left.
Only 25% are starters at this point, although the defensive line guys might be at some point this year. I'm pretty sure that the plan is to redshirt Alvarez. I wonder if the same might be true with Blaes. 33 or someone reported that Tate might be looking at a medical redshirt due to his ankle. The only problem with this is that he is already a 2 to play 2 guy.
Weir and Lyle should start to contribute more as they get up to speed at the D1 level. These guys didn't show up until this summer.
I am bothered by reports of W Franklin whining about coaching strategy. Put that effort into buying into what the coaches are trying to get you to do.

Re: hittin the juco trails
We need to build up our lines. With two average lines, we could at least be competitive. The thing is, however, that a big component of line play is experience, and furthermore, experience playing together as a unit. I like our future at tackle with the RSFr Lamaak and Soph Dedrick starting w/ RSFr Hulbert and Fr Baysinger backing up. Stephens is huge and shows promise as a SO guard, and throw in a 340 lb road grader like Osemele at RG and maybe we could move people. I don't know whats going on at center, we need someone to step up here.
Think how good our D-Line was 2 years ago, with Berryman (perhaps the most dominant pass rusher at ISU since Hayward) Leaders and "Big Play" Curvey (consistent and very talented multiyear starters) and Moorehead (all time ISU sack leader) Outside of Berryman, none of those guys were heavily recruited. Taylor and Braaksma especially arent gonna win games for us. I want to Chizik try and mold something for the future with guys like Parker, Lyle, Randy Kellman, Jerrod Black, Bailey Johnson, and Nate Frere...if he ever gets healthy

What is going on with big Nate? I thought he'd back up Rubin this year.

Re: hittin the juco trails
I'm going to agree with the posts in this thread that think we should be giving anywhere from 8-12 to Juco. Yes we do need instance success but in the same respect we need success in the future. Filling all the majority of the scholarships with Juco is not a good idea because it does not provide success in the future. It results in an attempt to rebuild the entire team every 2-3 years when the mass of Juco graduate or leave ISU.
The reasoning for want High School guys is so we can train them the way the coaches want them to play the game. Bringing in Juco's eases the process because they are more experienced but every team has a different style of play. This is what we are trying to find in our team now.
We need to find a good ratio of Juco guys to HS guys so that we can get instance success and have the Juco guys help push the HS guys to allow them to learn and improve quicker.
A good example would be the offense linemen. Bring in a couple great Jucos combined with returners and they will be able to push the incoming HS guys and they will be able to learn the program much quicker.

Re: hittin the juco trails
You gotta trust our coaches with Juco talent. So far they have done a nice job, especially with the late start.
Plus they have found some nice sophomore jucos.

Re: hittin the juco trails
The quality of talent that we can get from high school players is much lower than what we can get from the juco ranks right now. The only stability that recruiting high school students primarily will provide is stable underperformance of the team because we will not get many 3 and 4 star athletes. If we want to win, we will have to rely on jucos in the short or mid-term. When and if we get a record of success and some better facilities, then we can focus more on high school kids.
Not a recruiting or even football expert, but just being realistic . . . if we want to compete with Nebraska we have to have as good of athletes as they do. Right now, we just can't compete against them for high school talent.

Re: hittin the juco trails
Also look for the 3-years Jucos - we nabbed a few. And whenever you get a December grad the kid gets a leg-up. Jucos to fill holes, HS kids to build the foundation.

JUCO's the First Couple Years
I'd be surprised if we don't sign 8-10 JUCO's this year. We need immediate help on both lines- we were dominated by UNI & Kent State up front.
I'd say we have the following needs for JUCO players:
1 WR
1 C
1 G
1 T
1 K
1 DE
2 DT
1 S
1 CB
Hopefully, most are 3 year JUCO's or enroll in Dec.

Too bad the jucos can't come in now. This team lacks talent.

If we go 1-11 this year, then 4-8, then 5-9, recruiting will dictate an infusion of juco talent to survive.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

Nebraska took a fifth year transfer for a qb.
