hittin the juco trails
http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewrank...08&ra_key=1975
from the free stuff. we are currently pursuing: Ford #9 4star DE, Gray #16 4 star DB, Bedford #21 4 star DE, Williams #30 4 star DB, Johnson #39 3 star RB, Miller #41 3 star DT, Epps #43 3 star DT and Mack #50 3 star OL. i personally like the thought of having some if not all of these jucos on the team. instant upgrades at nearly every position. i know a lot of you out there would rather chizik went the high school route but we need impact players now and i think these guys are definately that. only mack currentl has us high on his list, the others all show medium interest.

Re: hittin the juco trails
If anyone watching our current team is against us getting some JUCOs to help fill some of the gaps we have right now, well - that's their prerogative.
At this point, I don't care who they are or where they come from, we just need guys that can compete and help us win at this level...now.
I'd much rather they be HS kids, but we desperately need a shot in the arm.

Re: hittin the juco trails
Expect to see ISU enter the picture with even more of those top 50 guys too... We need Juco help in the worst way.

Re: hittin the juco trails
i gotta believe any one of these kids likes the idea of immediate playing time they would get by coming here.

Re: hittin the juco trails
I say we recruit JC for about 18 of the 25 schollarships and use the rest on High School offensive lineman and defensive lineman. That's just me though. I think we need an influx of talent right now.

Re: hittin the juco trails
I can't disagree with that, KN. Get a mixture of JUCO talent in here for '08 and then some HS beef - let 'em get bigger for a year or two - put together an offensive line with size, mild experience and youth - similar to what Iowa has right now. No upperclassmen on that line in Iowa City - must be nice.

Re: hittin the juco trails
I don't like the idea of heavy recruitment of jucos. I'd much rather sacrafice short-term success for long term stability. Jucos don't provide that, HS kids do.

Re: hittin the juco trails
how about in 2010 if we get 18 more good jucos? what would be bad with that? it worked for K-state

Re: hittin the juco trails
JUCO's are great in that they can provide instant relief in areas that are hurting you. They are bad in the fact that they are generally only here for 2 years and don't have the same time to get used to the system. And they don't always live up to their billing.
I have no problem with another year or two of hitting the JUCO trail hard. After that time, however, we should concentrate more on HS talent. That doesn't mean we should stay away from JUCO's, because we shouldn't. We are still going to have to somewhat rely on JUCO's until we can become regular winners. And that's going to take some time folks.

Re: hittin the juco trails
You see how many of the guys are from El Camino (Same as JJ Bass), Coffeyville (Weir), and Independence (Bell)? Hopefully those guys wouldn't mind talking some of their buddies in to coming down next year. I honestly wouldn't mind bringing in 6-10 jucos every year - I know it's not the best situation but let's face it, some of our best players in recent history have been juco transfers.

Re: hittin the juco trails
Did you see who we are in competition with for these kids, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Miami Fl, Arkansas, not bad company. You can tell the college coaches that believe Juco talent can help right away.
Not one of those top 50 kids go to an Iowa JC, too bad, Iowa JCs used to be considered some of the best.

Re: hittin the juco trails
Our success rate this past year hasn't been that good.
Bass, Bell and Dedrick are starting.
Weir, Bibbs, and Lyle are second stringers that have combined for 6 tackles.
W. Franklin and C. Franklin have played, but haven't caught a pass.
Blaes, Tate and Alvarez have not played. McMahon left.
Only 25% are starters at this point, although the defensive line guys might be at some point this year.
