People are actually members of the alumni association?

Well, the university gets money from the state, federal govt.(?) and tuition. I dont think they're stuggling for cash.

ISU faculty salaries may be competitive, but just barely. There are all kinds of construction projects in the works that need funded.
$100/year for the Alumni Association is not too much. You get the cool calendar with pictures of campus and discounts at a lot of places. I know that 20%? discount at T-Galaxy and the UBS comes in handy.

The discounts in clothing alone are reason enough to become a member.

CBS also offers the discount - 15% if I remember correctly... (Not many people used it while I worked there...)
Dunno what other discounts you guys get, but I have no problem paying for my Student Alumni card in discounts (then again, I live in Ames and we only pay $15 for ours... plus we get a T-shirt)

ISU has almost 200,000 living alums, 50,000 of which are members of the Alumni Association. That means 1-in-4 have joined the Alumni Association, that's pretty significant.
