Punishment handed down to Patriots/Belichick....

$500,000 fine for Belichick, $250,000 fine to the Patriots, and they will lose a first round draft pick for the 2008 draft if they make the playoffs this season.

Goodell is swinging the big hammer again, those are hefty fines. The sad part is, the Pats probably aren't the only team doing that kind of stuff.

Still waiting on an article from ESPN.com.

I thought that was a pretty big fine until I read this. SI.com - Racing - McLaren team fined $100m in F1 spying case - Thursday September 13, 2007 3:52PM

$100 million now that's a fine.

Commissioner Roger Goodell also ordered the team to give up next year's first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs and second- and third-round picks if it doesn't.

Here's a great column from Dr. Z. This certainly isn't the first time this organization has been around some pretty fishy stuff.

Very harsh yet I don't disagree with it. Some think the new commish is way to hard on guys/teams.

I really appreciate the work he's doing to maintain the integrity of the NFL - and build upon it.

I might be alone in this, but I just don't see stealing signs as a big deal. No one seems to have a problem in baseball when a runner reaches second stealing signs - the battery just changes up the signs. Baseball also has four or five guys at the same time signing to players, the player just has to know which one to look at. I mean, yes, using a video camera seems a little excessive, but when you get right down to it really what's the difference between devoting a guy to picking out the signs (which apparently is ok) and videotaping them?

Helser-Woodrow (-61|122)
Roberts-Harriman (-74|133)
Welch-Ayres (-73|133)

I agree with you, but since it is the Pats getting fined, I am all for it!

What do Cyclone fans and Hawkeye fans have in common?
Neither one ever attended the University of Iowa.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. Where the pats screwed up is having the guy on the sideline. Stick him in the stands or somewhere with a zoom lens.

I'm guessing they're saying you have to draw a line somewhere.

How about next they allow the teams to use those highpowered microphones to listen in on the sideline? Coaches and players already cover their mouths to avoid lip readers I guess.

Or pickoff the wireless transmissions off the headsets?
