Legendary wrestling coach Dan Gable has stepped down as assistant coach at Iowa, officials indicated this afternoon in a press release.
Gable, the architect of one of college sports’ biggest dynasties as head coach of the Hawkeyes, had returned from retirement to help current coach Tom Brands — an Olympic gold medalist and former Iowa NCAA champion.
Brands said Gable will remain fully engaged in the day-to-day operations of Iowa’s wrestling program, but without the title or on-the-mat responsibilities that come with the title of assistant coach.
“Dan has been my coach and my mentor. What’s important to me is that he’s going to remain involved in the Hawkeye wrestling program and will continue to play a significant role as we continue to make progress toward the goal of domination,” Brands said in a statement.
Gable also was quoted in the statement: “My assistant coach’s role was always temporary and I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be directly involved in our wrestling program as much as NCAA rules allow me to be.”
Gable will return to his role as special assistant to the director of athletics effective Oct. 1. Another full-time coach will be added to the wrestling staff.
Brands said he has no timetable for the hiring of a full-time assistant coach.

I am pretty sure that is every teams goal. He's just telling it like it is.
Not to defend the Hawks or anything, but lighten-up on the Hatorade just a bit.

Iowa and ISU both have extremely strong wrestling programs. Two of the best - if not the best programs in the nation. Why wouldn't Brands be interested in domination?

I can understand posting this thread if it was say, MBB, WBB, FB, Baseball, Soccer, Track, or basically anything besides wrestling. However, ISU, OU, OSU, and Iowa are four of the most dominant wrestling programs in history. That's a legit thing to say.

That doesn't surprise me from Brands. I heard he is pretty insane about wrestling. Some wrestlers don't like him solely because of that. Just what I heard.

Yeah, not real surprising. I'm pretty sure Gable had the goal of domination. He did a pretty good job of it when he was coach, and Brands is a Gable product. Too bad Brands stepped in front of the Cael truck. -

You gotta be tough - it's not just weight training and technique. These guys are insane.
