He and his wife, Karen, were standing on the balcony outside the Jacobson Building when Bret Culbertson's winning field goal sailed toward them.
"We've had these seats for the last two years," Kerns said. "We're relatively acquainted with where a right-foot kicker will kick the ball in a short-yardage position.
"I just put myself in that position and waited for it."
Karen seemed skeptical.
"He goes, 'I'm going to catch that ball, and I'm not giving it back,' " she said. Joseph had a change of heart when he saw Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard.
"I swore I was going to keep it," he said. "As soon as I took one look at Jamie, I ran over and handed him the ball and gave him a hug."
Pollard gave the ball to Gene Chizik in commemoration of the coach's first win.
"I wish I could cut that ball in about 100 pieces," Chizik said.
