Meltdown in Nebraska
So, how long before NU runs Callahan out of Lincoln? Judging by the 32 different articles about the USC game in the OWH Sunday edition, it won't be much longer. The fact that USC lined up and ran the ball down NU's throat all night doesn't sit very well with a lot of people here.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the West Coast Offense has no place in college football. It will be the downfall of Bill Callahan at NU.
If you have any questions about what type of coach Callahan is, please read the end of the article linked here. It will give you some insight into why not many people are enamored with ol' Billy. Omaha.com Sports Section -

I've gotta think he's gonna end up getting canned. I've posted on this before. Just a gut feeling I have, that you've given credence to with this article.

Re: Meltdown in Nebraska
Cally's half time interview on TV tells you all you need to know. His defense had gotten ripped to shreds by USC's running game and all he could talk about was his offensive play calling mix.

Re: Meltdown in Nebraska
I look back to his days in Oakland. He seemed to be a condescending a-hole. He took a Super Bowl team and ran them into the ground. He very nearly had his arse kicked by various members of his team. I would love nothing more than to see history repeat itself in Knebraska.

Re: Meltdown in Nebraska
From Day 1 I said it wasn't a good hire - just not a great fit.
I don't see Bill as a guy that can manage things when his team is struggling. While the situation was already cracking in Oakland when he was there, he did nothing to fill in those cracks.
They have Ball State and then us. Plenty of room to bounce back before the "showdown" at Missouri.

I'm lovin' it.... after living in that wretched state for too long and putting up with their fans, it was quite enjoyable to watch them get shredded saturday night.
Lee Barfknecht's column was pretty harsh but not out of line questioning Callahan. He's a good writer and not a NU homer. It also pointed out how under Callahan, NU gave up 70 versus Texas Tech. Yikes.

Re: Meltdown in Nebraska
I don't think it's the offense that will do Callahan in (they can score a few points, anyways...), it will be his inability to have a defense like NU fans have been used to.

Re: Meltdown in Nebraska
Nebraska can forget about National Championships with Billy Boy Callahan.
I will now give you the old Joe Namath "guarantee"...I GUARANTEE YOU THAT IF CALLAHAN DOES NOT WIN A BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP....HE WILL BE FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!
The way I see it Callahan has 2 more years to win a conference championship and if that eludes him he will be dispatched/ FIRED and the husker fans wont look back or shed a tear!!
Championships are all that count in Nebraskaville!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Meltdown in Nebraska
the thing is, who the heck is going to want to coach at Nebraska with that kind of pressure, and live in Lincoln? Callahan is bringing in 4 and 5 star recruits (although they sure didn't look like it against SoCals 4 and 5 star'ers), and is yet to cash in a title with them. I personally don't think NU will ever be at the level they were in the mid-90s, that was a special, once in a lifetime era of NU football... but stupid NU fans thought it could last forever. There was an aura with the program then, something that a long-time staff under Osborne developed, and it's not there anymore.

Re: Meltdown in Nebraska
We were out for dinner Saturday night and I checked in at half on the NU/USC game. It was something like 35-10 or some crazy score.
I told my father-in-law with a little chuckle. He asked who I was rooting for and asked if I was a "Big 12" guy.
I said I normally would be, but it's Nebraska and the number 1 team. So if they were to actually win -their fans would be more unbearable than usual. -
Re: Meltdown in Nebraska
Their problem, since Osborne's retirement, has been defense. They have a bunch of players that will get drafted, but they seem to lack the defensive schemes that allowed them to dominate when they were the "black shirts".
Callahan has to stop worrying about being an offensive coordinator, and he has to start managing the whole team. He shouldn't be a head coach. He should run an offense, and let someone else run the show.
Oh well, the longer he's there, the better it is for us.
