I don't see any way he gets any of those jobs. Maybe Arkansas but no way on the other two. He had 2 great years (while they were on probation) and three middle-tier bowls before starting 1-5 and quitting on his team in the middle of the season. I can't stand the guy because he's such a know-it-all with a really annoying voice.
...and a chubby little face. He stands all of 5'1". They should dress him up in a jester outfit so he could be the King's fool.
I listened to the jabs about Iowa. He was talking his smack on how Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee and a couple other teams were looking for new head coaches at the end of the year. He then throws Kirk Ferentz in there saying they shouldn't have lost to ISU who lost to UNI and Kent State(no argument here) and does more blasting on Iowa. I am sitting there yelling at my radio how right he is and agreeing with any smack on Iowa............................And then he says "And quit hollering at your radio or speakers there Cyclones, you don't have any room to talk losing to UNI and Kent State"............
All I got to say is how in the heck could he hear me yelling into my radio??????
I always find it weird that Rome never mentions that Kirk didn't come on for an interview, although I do think Kirk turned him down. When people don't come on he always brings it up like with Curtis Martin. Bill Walton and Charles Barkely use to turn Rome down for interviews and Rome would always run it into the ground by saying the wouldn't come on. I still think it has to do with Hawkeye fans flooding his emails every time he mentions an Iowa failure, and he just gets off on it. Also I was a huge Rome fan back then, if I remember right he was off pretty much the two weeks around New Years. Skip Bayless was in and he was really railing the big 10 and Hawkeye and Buckeye fans were trashing Bayless with emails, I think there was some carry over from that. But I am probably wrong.
He left Auburn because he felt some of the big boosters were working behind his back to get him fired (which was true). His 111-53-2 record at three stops is impressive. He also led Auburn to an 11-0 season while under probation from his predecessor (Pat Dye) and during that year and the next ran off the longest winning streak in AU history.
As someone stated earlier he simply has stayed out of coaching because the pay in broadcasting (although not as good as top coaching jobs) is decent and the stress level is significantly lower. Just a lifestyle decision he made.
I would be relatively certain that with his background (past success and networking contacts from the Bowden clan) he could get another decent job if he wanted to do it. I certainly hope that none of you that believe Bowden couldn't get another job do not also believe that McCarney (with his 56-85 record) should be able to get a good head coaching gig. If Bowden can't get a good gig...McCarney will never be a head coach again.
I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
