Just back from Toledo

I have to say that the Toledo fans were pretty good. My friend and I had a bunch of guys allow us to tailgate with them. Good time but a long ways from North Carolina. I should have went to bed instead of going to Chasers after the game but I need to have a couple more to forgot the loss.

Re: Just back from Toledo

We just got back to Des Moines. We didn't speak to any Toledo fans and none of them spoke to us. We didn't hang out in the parking lots trying to be social, but nonetheless.....

I will say though that all of Toledo looked to be a "rough neighborhood," at least from what we saw while driving around all day yesterday.

Re: Just back from Toledo

We just got back too... and had mixed reactions
Mostly, lots of @$$ holes. Got a lot of middle fingers, lot of "You guys suck" "F*** you guys, ect.
However we did have some alums come up to us and greet us while tailgating, and we talked with them for a while. The people that we sat with were pretty decent as well...

Heck the guy behind us even thanked us. The reason being, because of all the cheers we were leading around where we were, the people in the section next to us started trying to give us **** by doing our cheers for their team... (Guy said thats the loudest that section has been in a long time)

One last comment... atleast they hate the Hawkeyes too
I mean, they did keep yelling "F*** Iowa!"

Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly!

First words ANY Toledo fan said to myself and Flag Guy:

"F*** you Cyclones. You F***ing suck. I'm going to key your Honda."

I can understand talking trash after a game. But before a game when you're 0-3?

Also, I can safely say I saw more Michigan/Ohio State gear in the tailgate lots than I did Toledo gear.

Re: Just back from Toledo

The Rocket fans in the section next to us made fun of us for booing the refs after they called "Timeout - Iowa".

Re: Just back from Toledo

As a side note, their tailgating lot, Lot 25, looked like a war zone after the game, even before the students got back to it. I'm glad we parked far away from that area. I would like to think that none of our lots look THAT bad after a game, maybe its wishful thinking.

No problems here... surprised to read some of the negative comments.

Heh heh so much broken glass in Lot 25, it's amazing we didn't lose a tire (or 2 or 3 or 4...) fortuantly we parked near the front (about where the police and lot personal were working...)

I can see why glass isn't allowed at most tailgates any more

There are some rough areas... but a lot of nice areas also. Downtown for the most part is a nice area.

Re: Just back from Toledo

We stayed at the Maumbee Bay Resort in NE Toledo. Beautiful place right on lake Erie. We ate at the Navy Bistro on Friday which had a great view of the river. The fans we talked with were in Lot 25. They went to Ames last year and kept saying how impressed they were with ISU fans. I will agree on the OSU/Michigan gear. Crazy.

Did you happen to see G4 after the Iowa game? It was impossible to see that it's a grass lot for all the garbage. I did notice, however, that all the trashcans in the area were filled...

Re: Just back from Toledo

Hmmm, the Toledo fans we talked to before the game were pretty nice. Mostly girls, but a guy who tailgated with us (ISU fan) went over and did some beer bongs with them. No real issues that I saw.

Nobody really talked to us on the way in, a couple on the way out. Token A-hole or two. But they had friends telling them to shut-it. We sat about 10 rows behind Super and Flag and I know exactly who they're talking about that was such an a$$. But we hung out in the lot with a couple of younger guys, watched the Wisc/iowa game and they were great. As I said in another post, sad when the 20-somethings are more gracious winners than the 40-somethings. Older lady behind us complimented the team, said we deserved to win and that they were sorry for the behavior nearby.

Lot 25 was a war zone after the game, kind of embarrassing. But I've seen our lots like that as well.

Stadium was surprisingly nice. Glass Bowl seems like an odd name. I guess it has more to do with local industry, than anything to do with the stadium itself. Should've been "the castle" or something. Made of stone. But it was nice and convienient. Moderately nicer than Valley Stadium in WDM. Decent big screen, especially for such a small school. Could get a better sound system with a $100 gift card to Best Buy, however. Sounded like an walkee-talkee inside a coffee can.

And what the hell was with all the Ohio St gear? That was crazy. I was thinking we had an extremely good contingent there, until I realized alot of it was Toledo fans wearing OSU.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more cowbell.

You know another interesting thing was their band playing our fight song in the pregame show. I thought that was pretty cool.....and they did it without music, too.

Yeah, I'm a band nerd even though I didn't do marching band in college.

I THOUGHT I heard the Fight Song on my way in the stadium. We were a little late and accidentally went to the wrong side first.

I do know there are a good number of teams that play the opponent's song. UT played The Bells of Iowa State before the game in Austin last year, and OU actually played the Fight Song. I like it, it's a good tradition and a good way to pay respect to the opponent and their fans who made the trek for the game.
