Louisville freshman center has heart surgery

Sep. 22, 2007
CBSSports.com wire reports
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Louisville freshman basketball player Clarence Holloway had open-heart surgery Saturday morning to repair a wall of his aorta and his aortic valve.
Holloway, a 7-foot-1 center from Chicago, underwent the surgery at Jewish Hospital in Louisville after a physical Friday found the heart condition, university officials said.
Holloway is enrolled at Louisville, but has not been working out with the Cardinals while he awaits initial eligibility approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse. He will be sidelined for the entire 2007-08 season, but doctors said he will be able to return to the court in time.
"We're so pleased that Clarence came out of his surgery well and so thankful that we have the exemplary medical care that basically saved this young man's life," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said in a written statement.
Holloway played last season in prep school for the Chicago Boys to Men Math and English Academy. Following his senior year at Chicago's Harlan High School, Holloway spent time at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and was an early entry candidate for the 2006 NBA Draft before removing his name from consideration.

Yikes, thats too bad. Young guy.

"My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious. "

Re: Open heart Surgery

Speaking of which, did you all hear that Grant Stout was having some heart problems? I'm pretty sure I read he was either going to or already did have some kind of heart surgery.

McDermott was also at his heart surgery along with Jacobson last week.

Former UNI star has tumor removed from heart

Posted: Friday September 21, 2007 10:29AM; Updated: Friday September 21, 2007 10:29AM

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Former Northern Iowa basketball star Grant Stout is expected to make a full recovery from heart surgery, UNI coach Ben Jacobson said.
The coach said doctors removed a small, nonmalignant tumor from Grant's left ventricle on Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
"They feel it went exactly the way it needed to," Jacobson said.
Doctors expect Stout to be hospitalized until Monday or Tuesday. He'll return to his family's home in New Sharon and have a six- to eight-week recovery process.
Jacobson and Iowa State Coach Greg McDermott visited Stout in the hospital after the operation. McDermott was UNI's head coach during Stout's first three seasons.
The 22-year-old Stout is the Panthers' team's leader in career blocked shots. He averaged 12.6 and nine rebounds per game last season.
Stout was beginning his professional basketball career overseas but came home due to medical problems earlier this month.
