Is anyone catching the Springsteen show in St Paul come November? I have tickets and am thinking about where I should stay. I have never been to the Excel Center in St Paul.
Guess what I am looking for is whether or not to stay in downtown St Paul and if so...where?
I have been to Minneapolis a lot but have never ventured into St Paul. Is there any nightlife in the area?

I stay in St. Paul for business quite often. There is an Embassy Suites on 10th st. downtown. You might need to take a short cab ride to Xcel but it is close. Check out google maps or something. Our company gets a rate of $120 a night. I'm not sure if that is the normal rate or not.
Edit: There are some bars near Xcel that are popular during Wild hockey games. The St. Paul nightlife isn't as good as Minneapolis but it can still be fun.

Depends on how many nights you're staying. If you're doing more than one night, and want to go out, i'd stay in downtown Minneapolis instead. There is much more to do in downtown Minneapolis, and overall a better bar and restaurant scene. If you're only planning on being there for the night, downtown St Paul is fine.
Cab ride from downtown Minneapolis to St Paul would run about 20 dollars. If you drive to the show, expect parking to run about 10 dollars around the X. There are plenty of great bars near the X, it should be rocking up and down 7th street that night...

downtown is fun... i have stayed many nights in different hotels (all with the same gal, whew) in downtown Minn and St.Paul. Each time I use priceline and choose and area and price. haven't been disappointed yet.

Even though I live in St. Paul (not downtown) I prefer downtown Mpls in terms of things to do. But that isn't to say St. Paul doesn't have a lot going for it. The "X" is an AWESOME venue for hockey and concerts. The stadium seating (and balconies) are pretty vertical. Volumetrically, it's tighter and taller (so fans feel right on top of the ice); therefore, when it holds concerts, the acoustics are better than your average basketball arena. There are a lot of hotels in the downtown area (in St. Paul) just pick one and walk around. Again, you could go to Mlps, but St. Paul has a lot of stuff too (underated IMO.)

If you're looking for a great bar too, "The Liffey" right across the street from the "X" is a great place to throw down a few. Parking is a little tough, but it is a great bar.

I appreciate the advice of everyone here! Thanks! I am getting excited for the show just thinking about it and reading your posts! I see on the net there is a Hilton Garden Inn downtown St Paul for $118. Any reason I should avoid this place?
Again, thanks for all the advice on this topic!

-keep. This is the route we go when going out downtown, either city. We usually can choose a 3 or 4 star and bid 50-60$ and get a great spot every time. Usually the Doubletree, Hilton or Hyatt in downtown MPLS. We usually put in the bid 1-2 days prior to staying. Yes the bars around the X are a really good time, but many more choices in Minneapolis.

That should be fine. I've never stayed there. That should be really close to Xcel and the 7th street bars and restaurants.

I've always had great luck with Priceline.com in Minn/St.P. Might be worth a try...
