Dodie Dunson News
From Midstateshoops.com...interesting news including Kansas State and Oklahoma. "Former Bloomington H.S. and currently Vincennes JC star Dodie Dunson was recently visited by coaches from Indiana, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and South Florida. In addition, the 6’3” point guard has received offers from a number of Division I programs including Charlotte, Duquesne, Fordham, and Rhode Island." Here is the link Off the Court Extras «

Grades were the issue - The ISU's program has no room for a slip up.

The issue was Dodie has dyslexia and ISU failed to provide the assistance Dodie needed.
This was a well written article. Dodie and his family left with dignity and never said anything negative about ISU, Ames, or the fans.
I will support Dodie at any non-Big XII school.

Ugh...didn't like seeing that article, but yes - that is true. It's the reason he's no longer in a Cyclone uniform.

Re: Dodie Dunson News
There's nothing bad about the article. The program he was in which was weighted heavily on test scores wasn't conducive to him succeeding. When dealing with dyslexia tutors can't always be of big help. Dyslexia requires a person to take longer to read. In a timed test scenario it makes it difficult to read through everything. If you're doing papers, they can take their time, do their research and write it out. Hopefully he can find a program where the grades are based less on timed test scores.

Re: Dodie Dunson News
I thought that ISU had a program set up where if you had a learning disability, you could take an exam at a separate time in a conference room where you would be allocated more time? I'm almost sure that they do that.
Maybe that just didn't work out during the season.

Re: Dodie Dunson News
How can ISU not provide the assistance necessary for dyslexia? Is that even legal? Now he leaves and everyone is branding him as an idiot that can't make grades... Not a good image for the school or program.

Re: Dodie Dunson News
I am 100% sure that is the case. You can even have the test read to you, if need be. Disabilities are not taken lightly by the university. They will help in whatever way they can.
Just in case you didn't know... I'm a girl. -

Maybe that just didn't work out during the season. Never heard of that. A friend at ISU had dyslexia and he always took the tests with everyone else..

Re: Dodie Dunson News
No doubt, he would be helpful to the team, but better to let him go now then have him be the star in a couple years and lose him when we're counting on him.

You do have to report the disability for them to assist. Some people are embarrassed or don't want to take the time to do it. Accommodations : Student Disability Resources
Reasonable Accommodations are a modification or adjustment to a course, program, service, activity or facility that enable a qualified student with a disability to have an equal opportunity. An equal opportunity means a chance to attain the same level of performance or to enjoy equal benefits and privileges as are available to a similarly-situated student without a disability.
Accommodations are established after review of documentation. Students are required to meet with Student Disability Resource (SDR) Staff to set up accommodations. Students requiring scanned books or books on tape, sign language interpreters and captioning should contact the Staff weeks before the semester begins to ensure timely accommodations. A collaborative effort between the student, SDR Staff, and the faculty should produce a reasonable accommodation for a documented disability.
Examples of services and accommodations for which a student might be qualified include:
Alternative text format
Sign language interpreters / Captioning
Student Academic Accommodation Forms (SAARs)
Extended time for exams

I'm surprised this article came out, as when I learned of this disability and that Dodie would likely not be back, the university was doing everything possible to maintain his privacy on the matter.
No, I did not blame ISU...it's unrelated. Just surprised it's out, that's all.

Re: Dodie Dunson News
I wish Dodie the best, even if it's in the Big 12. I'm just bummed things didn't work out.
