I just flipped on the news, and it looks like a 14 year old went and shot a few teachers and students. Only he (the shooter) died after killing himself, and the victims are in fair to good shape.
Something needs to be done about all of these shootings - they are becoming more and more common.

The thing is, what should we do? I know that this has been becoming an increasing concern of mine about going into Education, jumping up into second about my fear of failing my students as a good teacher. The latter can be worked on personally, the former, not so much.
There is only so much you can do. If a kid wants to shoot his teacher or students, he'll do it wherever. You could put up security at the door of the school, but then he will just wait out in the parking lot and do it. It starts with parents realizing their kids have issues. Open communication.
And that's an unfortunate downfall in our society; not sure if it's recent or not, or just people not wanting to address emotional issues.Quote:

My parents werent the best communicators, but I was made accountable for my actions and my whereabouts. At times I thought they were nosey and strict, but I understand their concern now. They did it because they cared. I would like to think I will take that much interest in my kids without being over protective and pushy.
Yeah that has definitely jumped up the list...my building had a week last month where we were on lockdown twice. Neither one turned out bad, but I was really ticked about the first one since they came around and shut our blinds and told us to lock the door and not let anybody out...however they wouldn't tell me what was going on. Now I dont want to take away the accountability of the kid himself. You have to know what you are doing is wrong. If you dont then there is something wrong with you to begin with and parenting probably couldnt have prevented it. AKA Jeffrey Dahmer. Something snapped in that guys head unprovoked.

The news almost make the kids look like hero. Its really sad. Parents also have to know what their kids are doing. Asking them things and monitoring their lives.
For some reason, kids in high school will do anything for attention. We had a kid in my senior class that calld in bomb threats to our high school because he had no friends and wanted people to notice him.
Whoever owned the gun should be severly punished. They should never be allowed to own a gun again and should be subject to a very large (but not unlimited fine). Even if they had the gun locked up and the kid busted the safe to get it, I still think the gun owner should be accountable enough to make them think twice before owning a gun.Quote:
