Always be sure to check out of Cedar Rapids. When we flew to New York on 12 hours notice it was $1500/per person from Des Moines, $1100 out of Minn, $800 out of Omaha, $400 out of KC and $350 out of Cedar Rapids. We even checked Chicago and it was $375 which is funny since we flew through Chicago. So basically they paid us $25 to fly to Chicago...
If you want something cheap, don't go out or into DSM. It's always going be more expensive out of there since it's really small.
For some flights that's true. I'm going on a cruise in January and need to get to Ft. Lauderdale. Flying out of Des Moines was actually cheaper at the time I bought my tickets than flying out of KC. Also, if you are going to Vegas or Orlando...nothing beats cheap Allegiant flights (especially when you can get the Buy One Get One Free offer).
The last 4 or 5 times I've flown, its been out of Des Moines. Its just a pain driving to KC and spending the gas money, parking fees, etc.
