Re: Most dominant IA HS bball player?

In very recent years, Jason Bohannon did quite well at Linn Mar, played some important minutes in big games for Wisky last season.

Re: Most dominant IA HS bball player?

Al Lorenzen from CR was a McD's. I looked through that list and didn't realize all the McDonlad's All Americans that the Hawks have had. Scroll down the list and glance at colleges. Sam Okey, Luke Recker, Roy Marble, Kenyon Muray, Brad Lohaus, Ed Horton, etc. Makes me sick. ISU has had one and EIU has close to 10. I don't think very many of those players listed really panned out in the NBA, however.

Re: Most dominant IA HS bball player?

From the limited amount I saw some of these guys play at the state tournament, the player that most impressed me was Nick Collison. He was so smooth and just dominated the competition. I never saw Hoiberg (was out of state at the time), but I hear he was dominating also.

I played against Dean Oliver in HS....he was definitely tough. We were the closest anybody came to beating them during his senior season, and we lost by like 14 or something. We were tied and the end of the 3rd quarter, and then Oliver decided to take the game over, and it was done.

Collison was amazing though. He could do it all.

Re: Most dominant IA HS bball player?

As a pseudo old timer, I would throw the name of Mark Gannon into the mix. Dominating player on one of the most dominating teams (IC Regina) ever. Played on the Iowa final four team as a freshman. Got senioritis at Iowa and sorta washed out.

Also, during that same era, Bobby Hansen was basically a one man show at Dowling.

Sorry for giving props to a couple of Hawks, but they deserve to be in the discussion.

Re: Most dominant IA HS bball player?

I'm going to have to go with Nick Collison. Most centers were either very much undersized or if they did have the size they weren't athletic enough to hang with him. I'm also a little biased since I did go to high school with him. Nick also benefited from having a very good group of basketball players around him that knew how to get him the ball or provided a different threat so teams couldn't completely focus on him. For instance, Mike Lindeman, who started for Creighton for a couple of years, was a key guy on those championship teams. The basketball IQ on the floor for us those two years was through the roof. That can only help a very gifted athlete dominate a game the way Collison did.

Re: Most dominant IA HS bball player?

My vote would have to go to Reaf. Watched him put up 51 points against my school when he was a senior. We scored 50.

Re: Most dominant IA HS bball player?

Hard to pick just one, but my list would be (in no particular order):

Troy Skinner (averaged something like 35 pts, 15 assts in sr year)
Raef LaFrentz (unstoppable in the post)
Jess Settles (could do everything in high school, played all 5 positions against us at state in 1992, recorded a triple double)

Also, the best hs tandem would be Skinner and Brian Pearson. Against Aurelia in 1988, Skinner scored 56 and Pearson 55 in a 134-79 win. That's just rediculous. For the record, Brian Pearson is the best shooter I have ever seen. I think he holds the records for most made 3's in a game with 15. His younger brother Mark hit 13 once.

Re: Most dominant IA HS bball player?

Enough of these Hawks and Jayhawks lets get to the real deal. Gary Thompson - led his high school of 70 (40 boys) to state tournament wins over Waterloo West and DM East before losing in the championship game to Davenport with an enrollment of over 2000. Now what ever became of him after high school? (that's a joke to you who take everything too seriously)

Re: Most dominant IA HS bball player?

My vote would be for Todd Berkenpas (sp?) Maple Valley '81. Great shooter, if he would have had the 3 point line, he would still have the H.S. scoring record. Very difficult to handle at the high school level.

Gerleman and McCann were a pretty good duo for Creston. Created very tough matchups being 6'5" and able to shoot from 30'.
