Did Mack Show Mercy?

Maybe this question has been raised somewhere else, but my friends and I were discussing this in the 3rd and 4th quarter yesterday: Did Mack Brown hold back for his friend Chizik?

I don't remember them throwing a whole lot in the 3rd and 4th. They're last 3-4 touchdowns were running plays and the interception return if I'm remembering correctly. I thought that he was showing some restraint; seems like he did everything he could not to score (going for it on 4th down well into ISU territory late in the game, instead of kicking the field goal) but our team just couldn't stop them.

Maybe this is just how Mack Brown coaches against everyone they blow out, or maybe it was just for Gene. What does everyone else think?

I think he tried to not run up the score, but it's hard when your opponent is laying flat on their back.

He did show mercy in the 4th quarter. They did do some throwing, especially early, in the 3rd quarter. Was Mack trying to teach Chizik a lesson about giving big cushions to WR's on every play. ISU has pass D problems, look at the completion % against ISU again this season. I know there has not been a lot of pressure on the QB's but come on! Not every team in the country has a great defensive line so how are they compensating for that?

I think this is what most schools do outside of KSU and NU. There is no point to running up the score anymore.

Computers do not use score.

Dude you have to have something called SPEED to play tighter coverage. We clearly dont. Texas was NOT the first team to beat us with the pass. Chiziks gameplan was really the only option we had. Try to rush 4 and keep Texas in front of you. No way do we have the speed on defense to do anything sophisticated.

i read you entire post (twice in fact) and im going to answer the same way

im pretty sure chizik doesnt need this lesson...he needs DBs that can play on the line. strong enough to bump for 5 yards but then quick enough to keep up once they release. anyone close to football knows this, so im sure chizik does too. and anyone close to IState knows that we dont have this caliber of DBs right now.

i think mack called off the dogs early enough. he started rotating mccoy out in the 2nd quarter, once he saw we had no chance.

ISU is not the only team in the country with 'slow' DB's and an undersized d-line, why is that ISU gives up about 70% pass completion? Tell me what other teams across the country are doing to neutralize this? I do not have the answer that is why I am asking. Schemes should be able to cover some, not all, of this I know even with a definitive lack of talent.

my guess is that other teams with DBs similar to ours have a DL that is better than ours. this is without any investigation what-so-ever, just a guess. our problem is we are poor in both areas. im only argueing that between the two, i think the DBs are a stronger area than the DL.

another thing to remember in all of this is our DBs had not been tested by the likes of a UT WR. they are a class of their own.

OU is going to smack us around bad. If we are within 50 points I'll be surprised.
