    Brush with Fame

The thread earlier about encounters with ISU sports figures got me thinking on a bigger scale...

Who is the most famous person you have ever met? It doesn't count if you brush by them in a crowd. You have to have conversed, shook hands, etc.

Mine would probably be Peyton Manning, or Penn Jilette, from Penn and Teller.

Walter Payton when he was in Des Moines for the Ruan Grand Prix. My dad used to work down there and we had pit passes and were able to hang out with him. I was about 10 years old, but it was really cool.

We were at a restaraunt in SF a few years back and Sammy Sosa was sitting at the table next to us. My wife got up to go to the bathroom and Sammy totally checked her out. It was freakin awesome!!! At first she was offended, but then she thought it was pretty cool.

    Re: Brush with Fame

Stacey Keibler (WWE and dancing with the stars fame), JR Seau, most of the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles during the 2000-2002 years, Roy Jones Jr and Derek Jeter. (Probably many more including a few bands such as Papa Roach, Sum 41, Matchbox 20 and more. I was lucky enough to work the door at a popular Baltimore night club while in the Military out there.)

I had drinks/shots with all of them except Stacy K. I gave her my number on a Guinness coaster and for some reason she never called. I really wish I knew why.

(Forgot about Wayne Morgan a few year back at Wallaby's after the Iowa/Iowa State game, 23-3.)

Jerry Lewis. He did a show at Stephens Auditorium back in 1994(ish). A high school classmate of mine was his tour manager, so she took me back stage after the show and introduced me to him.

    Re: Brush with Fame

Shook hands with Harry Caray during a rain delay

Sat with Ari Fleischer on a flight from Chicago to New York. Had a great conversation about kids, our work, etc.

Had a brief conversation with Carol Shelby

Talked for around 20 minutes with Jamie Pollard at a tailgate

Had a beer with Moses Alou at a bar near Wrigley.

Met several famous or semi-famous musicians (Jani Lane of Warrant fame, Duff and Matt Sorum of GnR, Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon, etc, etc)

Reggie White. He was at the Straw Poll in 2000. I can't remember who he was supporting, but shook his hand, had a brief conversation, and got picture taken with him. Talked nothing about politics. BS'ed about how I was a Lions fan and how he ruined many a game.

I'm 6'4, 200. He did not seem all that big standing next to him. He seemed about "normal" sized to me. About 6' -6'2", I'd guess 240-250. Cool guy, too bad he died young.

Oh, I went to high school and was a friend of the DJ for Slipknot, does that count?

I don't think slipknot or ISU athletes count, or Tanna from the apprentice, she went to my gym for a while and ALWAYS got on the treadmill next to me. Every day at lunch, it was so annoying, I hate people that go to the gym to look pretty and not to work out.

Bill Walton-saw him at Merle Hay Mall when he was in town coaching one of his son's AAU teams. Talked to him briefly and shook his hand.

I sure hope Reggie White counts though!

Almost forgot, played league soccer and went to HS with Carlina Panthers center (Valley HS, Kansas U) Justin Hartwig.

    Re: Brush with Fame

In 2000 I think when I was still in high school, my family went to the twin cities for a weekend to catch a twins game. We stayed at the embassy sweets, aparently also the summer home of Twins TV man and (should be) hall of famer, Bert Blyleven. I rode the elevator with him, had a brief chat, and after the game, saw him at the restaraunt in the lobby and got an autographed baseball.

As for recent encounters, a couple weekends ago I saw Derek, from the Real World and the Gauntlet, at a house party here in Ames. One of my roomates and I beat his *** in beer pong.
