Does anybody know of any good places to live around the West Des Moines area? I would like to find a duplex/townhouse to rent, but would be willing to look at apartments too.

There are a lot of good apartments, but they do become a little more pricing in regards to the average renting rate. Upwards to 700-800 depending on rooms and sqft.
I have not seen a lot of duplexs, but plenting of new developements with townhomes. I would just check the paper regarding those.

Lots of great places, as long as you're not in Valley Junction. For apts I would check out The Fountains (lived there a few years), or Signature place (I think). Anywhere in the Jordan Creek, George Mills area is great.

I've got a townhouse I'll sell you but it's in Pleasant Hill It's only 15 minutes to West Des Moines.

I lived in Washington Heights for 2 years before I bought my house. Great prices for the amount of square footage you get. Not a ton of townhouses for rent but a lot to purchase. However, if you are going to spend that kind of money on a townhouse, if you can afford a little extra just buy a house.

We lived just east of 86th street right after college, great transition house, can walk home from the bars. There were always alot of houses and and duplexes for rent at all times and pretty reasonable. I know our two story three bedroom 2 bath was about 750/mo.

Many years ago I lived in a small apartment complex. They don't advertise or anything but they are all 2 bedrooms and reasonable priced. The address was 2100 grand WDM and they are owned by a private person.

Just my observations.

The Bridgewood Crossings area just west of Jordan Creek Town Center has townhouses priced from the low $100,000s; my wife and I lived there before the mall opened; I highly recommend the area.

I'd advice if you have the means to jump into a starter home if you'll be here a while. Rates aren't too bad (lower 6's as opposed to 8 when I got my first loan) and there are alot of starter, older properties available. It's getting pretty close to being a buyers market.
I wish I would've jumped into a home a little faster than I did, as opposed to 3 years of apts and renting from a friend for another 4 or 5. I'd probably own my place outright by now. I'd wager most here would say the same thing.
Alot more (well, maybe not ALOT), and certainly more to do and take on yourself. But at least YOU'RE getting something out of it.
If you're straight out of school, probably hard to get a loan right away. There are also a handful of houses I've seen around (Vine neighborhood, west of grand) that are for
rent.
Otherwise, the only apt I lived in was (formerly) Canterbury apts in Urbandale off Hickman, behind the KMart and Aamco transmission. They have older townhomes for rent. Never lived in one so I can't speak to them. Regardless - Do NOT live there.
