He stated the offer was an insult, and it was. It was a force-out move, and Steinbrenner knew exactly what he was doing.
This makes it twice that a team has "removed" the best manager in baseball.
I am not a Yankee fan, I am a Cardinals fan.
For those of you who don't remember, Torre was the Cardinals manager before LaRussa. Torre was a scapegoat in that firing, the management of the Cardinals even admitted that he was not the problem, the lack of talent was. The management said they had to do something to send a message.

some insult. Guaranteed $5 million dollars with the chance to make 3 more if they go to the post season. I wish I could get insulted like that whenever anyone wishes to do so........

Although for Torre that is a 33% pay cut from his previous contract. I know I wouldn't be happy about a 33% pay cut. see his quote "The fact that somebody is reducing your salary is just telling me they're not satisfied with what you're doing," Torre said Friday at a packed news conference. "There really was no negotiation involved. I was hoping there would be, but there wasn't. "If somebody wants you to do a job, if it takes them two weeks to figure out, yeah, we want to do this, should do this, yeah, you're a little suspicious," he added. "If somebody wanted me to manage here, I would be managing here." "I'm free to listen right now," he said. "I don't expect other ballclubs to pay me what the Yankees paid me."
Also, I think he was most peeved about the 1 year term on it.
I'm pretty sure he will have plenty of offers to manage again. Easily the most impressive resume in baseball.

Yeah I think the 1 year part was probably the most insulting part of that with the club only thinking about an option if the team made the World Series. If they really wanted him it would have been a multi-year deal.
The Yankees basically made Torre and offer he could easily refuse so they could save a little face and not have to technically fire him.

If he won the World Series, he would have made $8M, actually an incentive pay raise from $7M. Boo hoo, he did not want one more season of George.

You don't tell a hall of famer that he has to working with you isnt working you now have to prove yourself again and work for me. I hope Joe catches on with someone that will stick it to the Yanks!
That press conference was pure class and all the comments coming from Yankees brass an embarrassment to the organization, welcome to the 80s Yankees fans!

He was still the highest paid manager in baseball--look up the statistics. His salary previously, and would have been with the new contract, even, much higher than the average $1-2 mil./year that most other managers make.

I could care less about the Yankees, but I see where Torre is coming from. If I had been doing a job for 12 years or whatever, and done amazingly well by most standards, I'd be upset if they said we're taking away salary but you can make it back IF you do well. Doesn't seem very respectful of how well his teams have done.

He was 12 for 12 in making the playoffs and won 4 World Series. Getting your paycheck cut by 1/3 after doing that IS a slap in the face. Torre managed the team well enough through the regular seasons...its not his fault A-Rod can't hit in the playoffs.

I think more than the paycut the fact it was a 1 year offer was the biggest slap in the face. If you really wanted him back you offer a 2 or 3 year deal at the least. You're basically saying you don't have a lot of confidence so we are going to proctect ourselves so we aren't stuck with you any longer. I wouldn't be too worried if I was Torre, someone will give him a decent 3 year deal either this year or next if he decides to wait for a better situation. I think LaRussa and Torre both should look at the Seattle job. Nice team there that for awhile was in the playoff hunt and you won't have as much media attention there.

LaRussa is more than welcome to stay in St. Louis by me, but if he is not back, I hope the Cards can lure Torre back. Torre was fired by the Cards old owners/management in 1995, so maybe he would come back for the new management. After all, he played for St. Louis.
(Wishful thinking on my part)
