I was at the Amana Golf Course yesterday for the 3rd Annual World putting championship. Actually it is a fun event with 9 holes cut in a putting green, bluegrass band, food, beer, and fun. Anyway there was an auction held of some merchandise with the feature item being a 5 pound Hershey bar. Being a chocolate lover, and knowing that the proceeds were going to the American Cancer Society I decided to go for it. This is the second year a 5 lb Hershey bar was to be auctioned off.
I was wearing my Iowa State gear and as the auction was unfolding the auctioneer turned it into a Hawkeye versus Cyclone thing. The Hawkeye backed down when the bidding reached $70 and when the prize was awarded, a Cyclone cheer went up from half the room. This surprised the heck out of me as Amana is on the door step of Iowa City.
After the auction people came up to me to express their Cyclone pride. One was a former ISU wrestler from the late 60s, that knew "Danny" Gable. Another was a businessman from Bettendorf. And on and on. The guy from Bettendorf was going around telling everyone that he Cyclones won the football game, won the basketball game, and now won the Hershey bar.
Next year I'm sure the "bar" will be set even higher, so to speak.
