    Re: brian kelley

The one thing i remember that fateful monday was reading everything on here about Brian Kelly, heck i knew his dogs name for gods sake and had come to the belief that it was a good hire.....

Then a thread popped up with mention that a charter plane from Austin to Ames was enroute....i jumped on that flight tracker and i swear did nothing but watch that lil icon move northbound for like an hour.....

Then word was circulating it was Mean Gene and i thought no way.....

Your absolutely right, it was a huge PR move and the Pollard handled it was as much about PR to our fanbase as it was to ensure another program hearing were talking with Chiz didnt drop a hint that their coaching job may be open at seasons end....it was and still is an Awesome moment as a cyclone fan.....everything you need to know is this IMO - were 1-8 and our kids are going out there to battle, not giving up, busting their butts.....that to me says we have the right coach for however long hes here....

that quote by Mack Brown - right on........Look at how Ferentz is treated, and that program is used to winning.....you turn an average team into a perennial winner and you will walk on water........

They do it to create a kind of "fabricated demand" to try to strengthen their negotiating position and possibly renegotiate a better deal

Secondly, to try and compare the situation Kelly inherited at Cincinnati to what Chizik inherited at ISU is like comparing apples and oranges (to put it mildly). The Cincinnati coach was leaving to get a better job...the Michigan St. gig...because he had done a good job with the Cincinnati program. Our ex-coach was only able to land a defensive line job through calling in a favor from an old acquaintance in Leavitt because he had not done a good job with the ISU program. Additionally, Kelly was one of the last benefactors of a crazy rule (which has been changed) that allowed a kid that had graduated to transfer and play an additional year at another school without sitting out...this is how he got the kid he has playing QB from Wake Forest. This has been a huge factor for them since this kid was both talented and familiar with the offensive scheme Kelly runs.

Thirdly, I do believe that offensive oriented coaches (like Kelly) can come in and have a bigger immediate impact than defensive oriented coaches (like Chizik) but building through defense is the better long term way to build a successful program. In fact, just look at Cincinnati this year...they started out hot but as the season has progressed they have become vulnerable as their opponents are able to get "a book" on what they are trying to do offensively. They have lost two in a row and the last one was to a lousy Pitt team.

Bottom line is that Chizik was and continues to be the right choice in my opinion.
This is a very good post, I agree with all of your points. Add to that, Chizik WILL see this thing through. I'd hate to have a first year coach already being tossed around for a potential move. Kelly has apparently not stopped that from happening. That would be tough to take.

We don't know if Kelly is fanning the fire or not as to whether he is looking after one year! That his name is mentioned along with certain jobs is out of his hands! It is occurring mostly due to his success and his position at a school without football tradition. ANY football coach in the top 25 at Cinci will have his named attached to bigger and "better" jobs! That would happen whether he wanted it or not! If Coach Chizik somehow had us at 5-3 or 6-2 you can GUARANTEE that his name would be mentioned as a potential candidate for programs that are deemed bigger than ours! Regardless of whether or not Coach Chizik wanted that to happen!

When it was supposed to have been a guarantee that Brian Kelly was getting the job, the discussion on CF was without a doubt at least 50/50 on him. I'd even argue there were more against him than for him. Once we found out that it was Chizik, I didn't recall a single post saying, "Chizik is the wrong choice!!!"

JP knew after firing Mac that he needed a no doubt about it hire like Chizik. Props to him for getting it.

Dan resigning before the last game was nice of JP to let him have his day and his game to exit and to get an early jump on finding a coach before the dead recruiting period around XMAS.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style.

I think you guys are splitting hairs. Both are good coaches. I'm happy we got who we did.
