Baylor loses to Tartleton State

Men's Hoops Drops Exhibition Opener, 95-85 :: Baylor Led by Two 20-point Scorers

Honestly, Baylor was my "Suprise Big 12 team" pick this year. If they don't make the NCAA this year... Drew has to do less with more than any coach in the conference. He has recruited at an elite level, and he's never gotten more than 4 conference wins in a season. His Big 12 record is 12-52. He needs to start producing this year.

I mean this is only an exhibition and it's just one game, but they gave up 95 points. Oi.

85 points to a Division II (?) team is pretty embarrassing. When teams lose to these lower level division teams, it's not necessarily that big of a deal, but when they give up nearly 100 points in a loss, then it really has to make the fans kind of wonder.

ISU Student - Iowa fan. Best of both worlds.

It wouldn't have been so bad if it was a lower scoring game or if they team they lost to was even something people have heard of. That's just a nasty loss.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Grand Valley State beat Michigan State this weekend as well...something tells me not to read too much into that! Izzo will have that team ready!

Considering Mich. State was one of the favorites to go really far this year that is a big upset.

Hey....the lost to Grand Valley State...that could just be a hint that MSU isnt that good. Alot of D2 schools have a ton of talent these days too.

MSU is just showing what a powerhouse the Big 10 plans on being in basketball once again.

Maybe basketball will go just like football - parity across the country. Where is Turtle Tartleton State? Is that in Estonia?

Remember when Fizer/Tinsley & Co. lost at Drake to start the season...that worked out pretty well! No one wants to lose ever...but sometimes losses can get the attention of the players.

MBB is a lot more forgiving on unexpected losses than football is for sure!

Many of us seem to have forgotten our close call against Morningside (a NAIA team)...

Release: 11/21/2000

AMES, Iowa (AP) - Martin Rancik scored a career-high 32 points, including two free throws with 1.4 seconds to play in overtime, as Iowa State held off Morningside 102-97 Tuesday.

Morningside (2-1) battled back from a 13-point deficit midway through the second half and sent the game into overtime on a 3-pointer by Derek Paben with 4.3 seconds to play that tied the score at 88.

The Mustangs led by three points twice in the extra session, the last at 97-94 with 2:20 remaining after Andrew Drevo hit the first of two free throws. Morningside failed to score the rest of the way and Iowa State put the game away at the free throw line, hitting all six of its attempts in the last 30 seconds.

Paul Shirley, who scored 13 points, got Iowa State (1-0) to within one at 97-96 with 1:24 remaining. Jamaal Tinsley, who scored 20 points, missed two free throw attempts, but Rancik grabbed the rebound, was fouled by Drevo and made both attempts to put Iowa State ahead 98-97 with 30 seconds left.

Tinsley was fouled battling for a rebound with 13.9 seconds remaining and hit both attempts to put Iowa State ahead 100-97.

The Cyclones led by 10 points twice in the first half and led by nine at halftime, 43-34.

Morningside, led by Paben's 21 points, cut the margin to 72-67 with 7:11 remaining before eight unanswered points by Tinsley gave Iowa State an 80-67 lead. Dusty Wadlington had 18 points.

The Mustangs set a new Hilton Coliseum record for most 3-point baskets in a game, hitting 18 of 39. That broke the mark of 14 set by Princeton against Western Illinois Dec. 4, 1998, in the Norwest Cyclone Challenge.

The loss ended Morningside's 14-game winning streak against nonconference opponents.
