I remember going to a game to watch those guys and it was so loud I couldn't hear myself scream! surreal! was there Hilton Magic before Johnny Orr, coach? He was the best!
In 2000 I remember staying over night waiting in line while drinking Natty Lights outside of Hilton to get front row student section seats for the KU game. Do students still do this to get into the game? I also remember chanting, "Cheno-Worthless" quite often that game.
I don't know if Hilton has had crowd noise like back in Johnny's days. I remember Fred Hoiberg talking about how the floor was literally shaking from all the noise.
Here is a link to an article on Hilton. If you go half way down the page you will see that the term "Hilton Magic" was first coined in the late 80's...but it started before then!

George Raveling said of Hilton, "They made the crowds at Michigan State and Michigan look like Mary Poppins. It was the best road crowd I've observed in 10 years."

Thigpen had the game of his life in the second half against Oklahoma State, hitting everything in sight as ISU rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to win, 84-83, in overtime in the famous "earthquake" game. The Cyclones hit 24 of 30 shots after halftime to come back from a 38-20 deficit against the Cowboys. Thigpen dished to Hoiberg for a bucket and foul to put the Cyclones on top with time running down, driving the decibel level in Hilton to unprecedented heights. After the game, the players said they could feel the floor vibrating from the crowd noise. "My legs were shaking because the floor was rocking," said Hoiberg.
What they didn't mention was that I'm pretty sure Okie State was on the line for two that would have put them back ahead and missed both...with the floor moving.
It was a few years ago but we were playing Texas. The game was on the line, all Texas needed was a couple of free ones and they missed both and we won - that had my ears ringing for the next two days.
I am willing to be that we give a couple top 25 teams a run for there money! Even beating a good Big 12 team! I'm guessing either Kansas or Oklahoma!
I have been going to most games since Orr came to Ames. I remember as the "Heres Johnny" entrance got to the point where everyone got going for each game and never stopped. Hilton magic came from large crowds who really enjoyed Johnny's uptempo style of play.
The games I remember that have not been mentioned yet are the overtime Iowa game where Rhodes scored his 50 some points. That was a crazy loud game and I will never forget going to the restroom between overtimes and the floor in the restroom was shaking.
The most fun I had at a game was when Oklahoma was in town and the coach, Tubbs I think, was arguing with the officials leaving at halftime and the crowd was on him and he pointed at the scoreboard as he left the floor. It was very loud the whole second half and then Schaffer made the shot that won the game as the clock expired and the crowd went nuts and almost in unison pointed at the scoreboard. That was a great game that added to the legend.
Of all the games I have been to, the Oklahoma State game was the loudest I can remember.
