Hilton Magic
Attached are a couple of quotes about Hilton Magic. Anyone have their own favorites that help others understand what is so special about a basketball game at Iowa State? "They call it ‘Hilton Magic,'" Hinrich said of an atmosphere that has helped Iowa State claim 65 wins in 75 home games in Larry Eustachy's five years at ISU. "I don't know what it is, but the place does get really loud. It's a tough place to play. It's a fun college atmosphere." http://www2.kusports.com/news/2003/jan/06/first_stop_hilton/ How difficult is it for Kansas to win in Hilton Coliseum? Here's an example: The Cyclones recognized Danny Manning just after the first half ended. Manning, the former Kansas All-American who carried the Jayhawks to the 1988 NCAA championship, was sitting behind the KU bench. Why would Iowa State's public address announcer mention the presence of a former player from the visiting team? I mean, how often does that happen? Has it ever? And then I remembered that Manning made four visits to Hilton Coliseum and never won once, and I'm sure someone at ISU remembered. That's how hard it is to come into Hilton Coliseum and leave with a victory. http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2003/jan/07/woodling_kansas_mystical/ -

Here are a few....

Hilton Coliseum is one of my favorite college basketball venues and provides one of the best homecourt advantages in the country.
I have coached in places where, when your team falls behind in the second half, the fans fall asleep or, worse, leave. Not in Ames, Iowa. More then once, I have witnessed the 14,000 fans pick up their Cyclones and will them to a comeback. ESPN - Fraschilla: Hilton Coliseum is a unique place - Men's College Basketball

10. Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State (14,092) -- Many point to Krzyzewskiville in Durham -- where Duke students live in tents for the opportunity to attend games -- as the ultimate sign of devotion, but 14,000 showing up no matter how much snow or how low the Central Iowa wind chill, is far more impressive. And there they are, night after night, making a largely unremarkable architectural structure one of college basketball's best environs. A few years back, the Raleigh News & Observer statistically proved "Hilton Magic" provided the best home-court advantage in the country. One time I was there the Cyclones fans were so excited to beat Oklahoma, the floor shook from all the noise. Made you forget about the cold wind outside. Every game that is broadcast from this venue is crazed. You wonder how the Cyclones would ever lose a home game. ESPN - ESPN.com experts' favorite arenas - Men's College Basketball -
Re: Hilton Magic
Reading quotes like these is getting me amped up for the regular season to start. The exhibition games were fun, but the crowd was all but dead versus EA sports. Can't wait for the games against UNI and Iowa, and then the conference games.

I would love to see this article, I'd never even heard of it before.

Re: Hilton Magic
ya it would be cool to see a newer one
also use my sig..
Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative. ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other." -
Re: Hilton Magic
Does anyone have any tapes of the games that made Hilton Magic. Like the Texas game, or the Virginia game?

Re: Hilton Magic
Too bad it is not like that anymore. I have not heard magic like it used to be for a while. Maybe it was just Wayne Morgan ball, but ISU needs to get back to the noise levels of the 80s and 90s.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin 1775 -

Of course its easy to get loud when your team is in the top 10.

I completely agree. I remember when it was deafening. Im sure it will get back that way after a few years of consistency.

Re: Hilton Magic
People are talking about the past few years as if they are what made Hilton Magic. You have to go back to Johnny's days for the start of the original Hilton Magic.
What ever happened to truth, justice and the American Way? -
Re: Hilton Magic
It was a statistcal analysis comparing home winiing % against road winning %. The Johnny Orr syndrome skewed the results.
