Re: Outlaw Torture?
Before the Herbie versus Johnny dual continues, I just want to make one tangent comment.
I love the military’s fondness for acronyms! Whenever I come up with a new concept that will be used by a military-sponsored program, I make sure the name lends itself to a cool acronym. And before I knew who Herbie was, his proficient use of acronyms immediately revealed his extensive military service/connections. Finally, kudos to Johnny for figuring out LOLW; I had never heard of that before, so I was wondering what it meant.

If you have a fondness for military acronymns, you may find this publication interesting: FM 101-5-1/MCRP 5-2A Operational Terms and Graphics. I invite your attention to Chapter 2, Operational Acronyms and Abbreviations.

Re: Outlaw Torture?
The absolutely MOST frustrating and stupefying thing is "acronym creep". I guaran-f'ing-tee you that the copy of FM101-5-1 you have access to, is dated.
And the Army double, triple and even quadruple-taps acronyms.
Last month I got a two page note from the Army stating that about half of the terms we are using are forbidden/out-of-date. And then, the replacement vocabulary we are given is changed 3 or 4 times in the last month alone.
I'm glad I'm on the slack end of my service. I'm not willing to unlearn this stuff every few months, just so some guy can get a promotion for inventing a new acronym.

I'm going to assume that Mr. Tremain doesn't support torture in interrogation by anyone. I don't support it either. I'm reading into the discussion that we differ in WHY we don't support it. Again, to put words in Mr. Tremain's mouth, he doesn't agree with the ethics. I don't like the ethics of torture, either, but my main objection is that torture is pretty ineffective, as well as being harder on interrogators than on the "alleged victims" themselves.
It would be interesting to find out how common what we are describing as "torture" is, among USians. If it is being accurately reported, I'd have serious issues with the political figures who are "mum" on it. If, however, it is just a media issue, that is being blown out of proportion in both scale and scope, meh, I don't care.
I think the .gov needs to have at least the perception of being capable of doing "dirty jobs". It would be nice for it not to be headline news, though.
