Sobering Stat
Reading the Des Moines Register this morning I stumbled upon this not so happy stat:
Iowa State has an all-time record of 0-54-2 against teams ranked among the top six in the Associated Press Poll.
Ouch. Maybe we can break that little streak this weekend.

Nope, I am still sober.
I am pretty sure Nebraska was #2 in 1992 when we beat them.

Re: Sobering Stat
This brings up a good question. Where do peope on here go to get historical stats? I am sure there has to be a good place to get this kind of information out there, I am just not sure where it is.

Re: Sobering Stat
Media guides are a good spot.

Here is a link: FOOTBALL; Nebraska Is Whirled by a Cyclone - New York Times
Looks like they were indeed #7, but also #1 in the NYT computer rankings.

Pretty fun read. #7 Indeed. Unless you count the NY Times computer poll. LINK -

I was at this game in 1992 and I remember people going on and on about how we beat the #1 or #2 team in the country. Guess I shoulda asked them if it was AP or NYT?

I usually go off of memory if it is in the last 15 years or so. Longer than that I have to google or wikipedia (I know, bad source, but usually gets you close at least) or check Cyclones.com (it just takes forever to load the PDF though).

Just found this beauty too. College Football by Charlie -
Re: Sobering Stat
What I find most interesting on the College Football By Charlie website is the fact that there has never been an NCAA Champion Football team in D1-A. Lots and lots of BCS Champions and various "poll #1's" (AP, Coaches, Sagarin, etc), but not a single NCAA Champion. And it goes all the way back to 1869.

While only ranked 7th, I believe that the 92 NU team was on a roll and poised to climb higher in the rankings. Devaney was the AD at the time & during the pregame week he described the Husker squad as possibily the best that he had ever seen at NU.

Re: Sobering Stat
And the reason that the figure used is "top six" is because ISU has three victories over #7 teams -- 1976 Missouri, 1985 Oklahoma State, 1992 Nebraska -- the highest rated foes to be beaten.
The two ties: at #5 Oklahoma, 1981 (7-7); vs. #3 Nebraska, 1972 (23-23). Curiously, ISU was in the top 20 for each of those games as well.

Here's a good site. It doesn't have articles and such like the Charlie page, but has lots and lots of really good raw data: Jim and Sherri's Home Page -
