Was just wondering if any fellow Cyclone fans are going to be heading out in the early morning to hunt some deer. I hunt in North Central Iowa over by Geneva and Ackley.

Chuck Humeston, who works for the DNR, brought this Bobcat in to IVESCO today.
It was caught over by Ackley in a trap, that someone had set for a racoon.
It was dead when the person checked the trap.

The Ames area is full of Bob-Cats.
Skunk River has netted at least one dead Mountain Lion a few years ago.
This morning, I woke up to 4 inches of fresh snow, and my wife calling for me to look out the window. A Roe Buck was pulling our rose bush over the fence, so one of his Does could eat the rose flowers. (Roe are the little rabbit-looking deer common in Europe.)
I'd love to go shoot some deer with you guys. Especially if Iowa would grow up and allow rifle hunting.

You can use a high power during the January antlerless only season, at least in the southern two teirs of counties. I use a newer black powder rifle during regular gun season, decent range and accuracy.

Morgues would be full if there were rifles in play.

There's really no compelling reason to allow it.

Morgues would be full if there were rifles in play. That is just an ignorant statement.
Rifles are more accurate, and shed velocity and killing power, much, much more quickly than shotgun slugs. The state of Iowa pays MILLIONS of dollars to professional hunters to kill excess deer each year. (and they use the "dreaded rifles" to do it.)
When I was a kid, I got the whole "Rifles are more dangerous because the bullets travel so much farther" from the DNR guys, but in reality, that is a myth.
Rifle bullets, while initially possessing more velocity, are much less capable of killing at extreme ranges than shotgun slugs. Rifles are much less likely to miss their intended target, as well. (more humane on the deer, due to increased accuracy and simplicity in aiming due to low trajectory.) Shotgun slugs also overpenetrate more often than rifles. High velocity, light projectiles tend to be safer. Period.
Here's a link, for anyone who would be interested in a little "truth" to go with their preconceived myths and ignorance. The Box O' Truth - Ammo Penetration Testing
Frankly, Iowa's gun and hunting laws are pretty nonsensical. I doubt that things like "facts" will stir anyone to think or do differently.

I'd think something that is both safer and more humane would be attractive, even to someone who doesn't support hunting.
But that's just me....

Wait, so you cannot hunt with a rifle, but a shotgun is ok? I am a big outdoorsman can't you tell?

But that's just me.... i just don't think it is as much of a challenge, and if it were legalized as an open season, i would never use it. nothing more exciting/challenging then calling in a buck to within 30 yards and then nailing him with a bow and arrow.

I'd love to go shoot some deer with you guys. Especially if Iowa would grow up and allow rifle hunting. Too many farms, residences, and roads near everything for rifle hunting!
