Re: Is this record worth $3 mil. a year?
At this point it does seem that Kirk is overrated... however, I can't really point the finger at Kirk for ALL the off the field problems.
We are talking about college kids... They make mistakes... I made one when I was in college, but luckily, since I wasn't on the Football or Basketball team it didn't make front page news...
Just be careful how hard you are on the "program" for off the field indiscretions... They may come our way next.

Right now, it looks like it was a bad move. However, had the extension not been made, it's likely he would have gone somewhere else. There were a lot of lucrative offers on the table. Not to mention, he did a lot for the U of I, and there is no reason why they shouldn't have done anything/everything to show their appreciation. I think there was a lot of speculation by various sportswriters about potential jobs for KF, but I don't think there was nearly as much actual interest as everyone thought. Did he really have lots of offers to choose from? I'm not sure I buy that, especially Nebraska since Callahan's first year was 2004, which was the last year of Iowa's little run of greatness. I think it was more likely that Iowa overreacted to the rumors and threw a bunch of money at KF. I certainly can't blame them for locking him up based on the results of those years, but the amount of money was a bit rediculous.

2007 6-6 Thats a record of 18-18 over the past three years. Football is about what have you done for me lately. Is that worth $3 million a year? And does next year look a lot better for them? Add to that the off field behavior and this begins to look bleak. I hope KF STAYS at Iowa City! Based upon last 3 years he has earned his 3 mil/year. Who better to lead the program to Medicority. Besides he has made a 1 mil contribution to the Johnson County Jail for a "Suckeye Wing".

If Chizik's is still at that ratio 3-4 years from now, then that argument can be used.
It's funny that Ferentz has been paid $473,684 / win and the coach that just got done shaming the hawks on their own turf is only being paid $178,000 per year. He could go winless for 2 3/4 seasons before his next win and get paid the same amount per win.....

I saw something out of Cyclone football this year that I don't know if I have ever seen. We got BETTER as the season wore on. We CAME BACK from a 21 point deficit. We hit rock bottom in the Texas game and REBOUNDED for the rest of the season. Me thinks the price per win ratio will be lower in the years to come.

Chiz has success - he's in demand. He's in demand, we have to pay more. We pay more, hopefully he stays. It's a viscious cycle - but one I could deal with.
Chiz gets to 10 or 11 wins, and we're forking out 4 Mil for a cool $400K or so per win, anyone have a problem with that?
Not me.

The future looks very bright but the fact is that we still won 3 games. Many people are satisfied with the season (me included) and are ready to build on this year.
But the salary comparison is a true apples to apples one. 1st year coaches make less than 7th year coaches. So that factors into the ratio of $$ per win.

I actually heard some idiot on ESPN say he would be in the running for the Michigan job. I'm sure they would love to have a .500 coach take over their program. At least he holds his players to high moral standards.

I am not arguing with you, I actually agree with you totally. I just think that comparing Kirkie to Chizik at this point isn't a fair comparison. The gum chewer has been at EIU for quite a while now, has fully established his program with his thug players, and can do no better than 19-18 over the last 3 years and still be this states highest paid employee.

Honestly, I'd rather have Chizik right now as coach. I know Kirk has done some great things but he seems to have "relaxed" a little since his huge contract extension/raise.

Re: Is this record worth $3 mil. a year?
I really don't like talking much about Hawkey football, a little part of me dies every time I do. I have to say though. I think the situation the Hawkeyes are in now is again, product of their own ego. This is pretty much where the Hawkeyes have historically been in football. A couple of good seasons, a great season, then followed by a couple of bad ones. Their dominance over us in the 80's and 90's, the Ronny Harmon Rose bowl, combined with one well deserved BCS bid and multiple undeserving New Years Day Bowls gave the Hawk nation the idea that they were somehow a powerhouse in football. Yeah, they had some good runs in the 80s, but, only really had one shot at an NC under Hayden. So, essentially Hawkeye football is where they usually are, they are just PO'd because they think they are more than what they really are. They are not Florida or USC. I'm going to use the same argument now, towards the Hawkeyes that they used against us towards the end of last year. "You can't get anyone better, so live with it." I hate to burst the bubbly over Hawkeye football, but, they aren't a national powerhouse and they are far from a National Title contender. I also believe they've benefited as of late from playing in the Big 10, a conference that I've never been overly impressed with football wise and with great Bowl tie ins. Similar to Macs success in a very depleated Big XII North. Only we didn't have the Alamo Bowl as our dumpng ground for 7-5 teams.
So, they dumped a bunch of money in Kirk's lap. Anyone could probably do it. But, it's just proof that 1 great season doesn't make a coach. IF you ask me, it's the crappy seasons that make a coach and how they respond. Everyone is going to have down years. It's how you deal with those, weather the storm and change things for the future that make you a good coach. Not just pull in great season after great season. That doesn't happen for very many teams anymore.

If I'm Gary Barta, I make it clear that it isn't an option at this point. Without a bowl game this year (which isn't 100% for sure yet), there is nothing to hold on to but 11/17/07.
The campaign starts now. November 6, 2012.
