So West Virginia isn't determining on the field whether they should go to the NC game? LSU didn't determine that last night? Hawaii doesn't have a chance to determine their BCS fate? Kansas doesn't? Missouri doesn't? Oklahoma didn't? Ohio State didn't? Tennessee didn't just now?
All those team's fates are largely in their own hands. What we currently have is largely a playoff system without the structure. From week 1, you go out there and you play every single game. Every single game matters. You lose one, and you're done. You still have a shot to play for the NC, but you no longer control your own destiny.

The NFL should just adopt the bowl structure. So should every other level of football since bowls work so well for NCAA division 1.

A better question is why do Iowa State fans care about how the national champion is determined?

because 2 years from now when ISU is in the top 10 of the BCS in mid-november, it will matter.

    wishful thinking there......

perhaps b/c we have nothing else to talk about? we're rabid college fans? we're addicted to CF?
I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

The NFL has 32 teams that play 16 games. Nearly 40% of the league makes the playoffs every year.

For College football to do the same, you'd need to play a 60 game season before you have a 48 team playoff.

College football has a ton more tradition and history than the NFL. Quite frankly, the NFL regular season is pretty much meaningless, other than to separate out the very worst teams from the mediocre and above which all get shoved into a playoff.

Playing for homefield is meaningless? Why do they call it the home field advantage then?

I would say for the most part the regular season in college football is meaningless too. Iowa went to a January bowl game with a 7-4 record, teams that were 8-3 and beat them on the field were past over because Iowa traveled better. How about the next season when a 6-6 Iowa team went to the Alamo Bowl? Same scenario as the previous year.

If Hawaii goes undefeated they do not get a shot at the national title how is this right? Auburn did not get a shot at the national title and they were undefeated in the SEC, how is that right? Yes, the bowl system works I guess. On the field does not seem to matter in college football either.

If Hawaii got a shot at the NCAA title game, you'd be screwing over a real team that likely played a real schedule and beat other real teams.

Yes, I'd say home field advantage is largely meaningless. And that's mostly beside the point anyway, since you can still lose a boatload of games and retain it.

I had a post somewhere about ISU beating Iowa and costing it a chance at a national championship one year, a trip to a BCS bowl another, and this year, it likely means they won't go at all. So what if a team goes to a bowl game that's slightly above their heads? Iowa was competitive in all the bowls they played in. I certainly think in hindsight, they were good picks for those bowls. They barely lost last year and won the year before.

If Hawaii didn't have such a horrible schedule, I don't see how they don't go to the NC game. Auburn did not get a shot at the national title game, true. That's my only real gripe with the system - there are often ~3-4 teams that are probably all about the same that should probably get a shot. I think most of this could be fixed with a +1 game. Not really a playoff, but it would address 99% of the "split national championship" debate. As far as the Hawaiis of the world go, if they put together an undefeated season after playing a schedule like Fresno State did this year (Oregon, Kansas State, Texas A&M OOC), they would get a lot more consideration.

The only way to get to a fair playoff, would be the NCAA stepping in and getting rid of conference affiliations and managing the schedules themselves. I don't think that will ever happen.

Not to be picky but Iowa lost that January 1 bowl game to Florida and about their game being close last year, why would a 9-3 Texas team want to be up for a 6-6 Iowa team? I said last year before that game to take Iowa and the points because everything was in their favor for the game except talent. Talent is the only reason Texas won that game.

Your last paragraph is darn good! I think you mean conference affiliations with bowl games? I think with an 11 game schedule and maybe say 6 conference games instead of 8 a lot of things can be determined.

You can't honestly say that Iowa didn't deserve to go to the Orange bowl, though. They had 1 loss to a good ISU team, and outside of that could be in the talk for a national championship game. They didn't get selected when they didn't deserve it, and that was your point. Now I don't think they were really that awesome of a team that year, but they certainly earned a great bowl game.

Regardless why Texas wouldn't "get up" for a 6-6 team, it was a close game.

No, I mean conference affiliations period. Until you can make any team play any other team any given year, you'll never be able to figure out the proper seeding for a tournament. Anything else that gets tacked on to 1A football will just be a compromise otherwise, which is exactly what the BCS is. If you want a "true" national champion, you have to ditch the conferences, or get rid of a whole bunch of teams (i.e. the mid-majors).
